Gerontological Nursing Program (Admissions Suspended) The College of Nursing is an integral part of the Medical University of South Carolina which is the only academic Health Science Center in the state. We are widely recognized for providing a supportive learning environment that has a low student to faculty ratio, expert faculty and preceptors as well as highly successful complex clinical settings. Students are encouraged to personalize their program of study in the context of our multi-focal Gerontological Nursing program. Program Benefits
This graduate program prepares nurses for a new model of advanced practice in gerontologic/complementary care nursing. Courses focus on the management of traditional medical and psychosocial health problems and the complementary care skills of alternative medicine. This program offers an excellent and unique pairing of these specialties that will respond to the existing and future health care environment and provide these services to older people. This combination will enable the advanced practice nurse to advise and evaluate complementary therapies in older adults. Graduates of the program are eligible to seek national certification in gerontology as a Nurse Practitioner (NP). An additional semester of clinical work also enables the graduate student to seek national certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) enhancing the marketability of this graduate. Career Opportunities
Nurse Practitioners have the opportunity to be employed in a wide variety of settings such as: community health clinics, rural health clinics, physician offices, public health departments, hospitals, home health agencies, urgent care/emergency rooms, specialty areas, Armed Forces and Veterans’ Administration facilities and schools of nursing.
