External Scholarships

External scholarships are awards that require a separate application process. Generally, the organization offering the scholarship notifies the College of Nursing of their award and the application process. Many of these awards require that the applicant submit a personal statement, academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Students are notified of these scholarship opportunities through campus e-mail.

American Cancer Society

Doctoral Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing
Awarded to graduate students pursuing doctoral study in thenfollowing cancer nursing fields: research, education, administration, or clinical practice. Awards are made for up to four years with a stipend of $15,000 per year.

Application Deadline: December 15

Master's Degree Scholarships in Cancer Nursing
This award supports graduate students pursuing master's degrees in cancer nursing. Awards are made for up to two years in the annual amount of $10,000.

American Nurses Association Ethnic Minority Fellowship Program

The American Nurses Association's Ethnic Minority Fellowship Program is seeking applicants for its Clinical Research Pre-Doctoral Fellowship. This program is supported by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and provides 3-5 fellowships to master's prepared nurses committed to pursuing doctoral study on minority psychiatric-mental health and substance abuse issues.

Applicants must be an American citizen, have a master's degree in psychiatric/mental health nursing, be a registered nurse, be a member of ANA, a member of a ethnic/racial minority group, and able to demonstrate a commitment to a research career in nursing.

Anne A. Agnew Scholarship

The SC State Employees Association is now accepting applications for Agnew Scholarships. Students who have completed at least one year at a college, university, or other institution of higher education are eligible for these scholarships. Three $1000 scholarships will be awarded annually if funds are available.

Campus RN/AACN Nursing Scholarship Fund

CampusRN, the leading employment website for nursing/allied health care students and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) have partnered to offer this new scholarship program for students pursuing professional nursing education programs. Established in April 2003, this scholarship program supports students who are seeking a baccalaureate, master’s or doctoral degree in nursing. Special consideration will be given to students:

• Enrolled in a master’s or doctoral program with the goal of pursuing a nursing faculty career;
• Completing an RN to baccalaureate program (BSN); or
• Enrolled in an accelerated baccalaureate or master’s degree nursing program.

Community Incentive for Diversity: A South Carolina AHEC Leadership Initiative

This scholarship provides financial, social, and professional development supports to encourage minorities to enroll in and successfully complete an accredited pediatric, adult, family, psychiatric, geriatric, or obstetrics nurse practitioner or nurse midwifery program. CID participants must be a full-time student and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA throughout their academic program. This is administered through AHEC.

Datatel Scholarships

The Datatel Scholars Foundation is a tax-exempt foundation established by Datatel in 1990 to award scholarships to eligible students currently attending one of Datatel's over 540 client institutions. The foundation was created due to Datatel's long standing commitment to higher education, and to give back to its client base by centering Datatel's philanthropic focus on scholarships.

Ethel Louise Armstrong Foundation Scholarship

Ethel Louise Armstrong Scholarships are available to women graduate students with physical disabilities who are enrolled in a college or university in the United States. These scholarships are awarded on an objective and nondiscriminatory basis.

Scholarships range up to a maximum of $1000-$2000.

Applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

1. The student must be a woman with a physical disability
2. The student must be currently enrolled or actively applying to a graduate program in an accredited college or university in the United States
3. The student must be active in a local, state, or national disability organization - either in person ot electronically - which is providing services and/or advocacy for people with disabilities
4. The student must be willing to network with the ELA Board of Director and the current and alumni recipients on our listserv. This will enhance the ELA Scholar's
   support base in professional and political arena's.
5. The student must be willing to update ELA with an annual letter on her progress in her academic and working career.

Exchange Club Scholarship

The selected recipient may be an incoming or returning student, a resident of Berkeley/Charleston/Dorchester counties, have a 3.0 GPA or better, and a history of community service. A broadcast e-mail to College of Nursing students is sent (usually during the summer) to solicit resumes/applications from qualified students.

Gift of Life Scholarship

The Gift of Life Trust Fund awards scholarships up to $5000 to a SC resident who is seeking a degree in a field which is of direct importance to organ and tissue donation and transplantation. For consideration, applicants must have a professional interest in the field of organ and tissue donation and transplantation and also be a student seeking an Undergraduate or Graduate degree in Medicine or Nursing. Graduates can apply at anytime in their program.

Undergraduates must be juniors or seniors. Selection criteria include cumulative gpa of 3.0 or better, documentation of enrollment into a degree program, letter of interest, official transcripts and letters of recommendation. If selected as a recipient, the awardee would be required to participate in the annual Gift of Life Trust Fund banquet.

Helen Golding Lynch Scholarship

Palmetto Health is interested in providing eligible students with an educational grant. Applicants must have completed a course in Fundamentals of Nursing, maintain a 2.5 GPA and earn a grade of "C" or better in all nursing courses. Preference is given to employees of Palmetto Health. Ida Spruill Nursing Scholarship

The Tri-County Black Nurses Association awards a $1000 scholarship to a deserving minority nursing student in the basic BSN degree program.

Students must complete a one page essay describing themselves and why they should be considered for the scholarship. Names of two references are required, and one letter of recommendation must accompany the

Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship

The Irene and Daisy MacGregor Memorial Scholarship is sponsored by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution to support students who have been accepted into or are pursuing an approved course of study to become a medical doctor, or who are pursuing an approved course of study in the field of psychiatric nursing, graduate level, at an accredited medical school. All applicants must be US citizens and attend an accredited college or university in the US.

March of Dimes Scholarship

The March of Dimes offers four $5000 scholarships to recognize and promote excellence in nursing care of mothers and infants. The application is available form this site:

Qualified scholarship applicants are registered nurses currently enrolled in a graduate program in maternal-child nursing at the Master's or Doctorate level with at least one academic term to complete. Four winners are honored annually at the meetings of the Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses, the American College of Nurse Midwives, or the National Association of Neonatal Nurses. 

Minority Nurse Magazine Scholarship

The Minority Nurse Magazine Scholarship

Programs awards four scholarships - two $1000 awards and two $500 awards to minority nursing students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to the nursing profession and to the communities. The awards are specifically designed to assist RN's and undergraduate students in completing a BSN degree.

Applications must have a 3.0 GPA or better, financial need, and a
commitment to the community. A letter of recommendation fro a faculty member, financial aid officer, and community leader is required for the application.

National Association of Hispanic Nurses National Scholarships

The National Association of Hispanic Nurses will be awarding scholarships to outstanding Hispanic nursing students who demonstrate potential for professional contributions to nursing and through their actions will serve as positive role models to Hispanic nursing students. To qualify, students must be currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing, and be a United States citizen or legal resident of the United States.

Criteria for the scholarship includes a minimum GPA of 3.0, potential for leadership in nursing, financial need, and membership in the National Association of Hispanic Nurses.

The North Carolina Student Loan Program for Health, Science, and Mathematics

In an effort to increase the number of health, science, and mathematics professionals, the North Carolina General Assembly appropriates funds for need basedstudent loans. To be eligible,you must:

1. be a US citizen and resident of NC
2. have been unconditionally promoted to the third, fourth, or fifth year of an approved undergraduate program
3. have attained unconditional acceptance into a graduate level program or selected two-year undergraduate program
4. fit the profile for financial need as determined by the program rules, secure the loan by signing a promissory note to be endorsed by two or more cosigners

The National Italian American Foundation (NAIF) offers scholarships and grants to outstanding students. There are two
categories:

1. Italian American students who demonstrate outstanding potential and academic achievement, and

   achievement.

Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program

The goals of the NELRP are to assist in the recruitment and retention of professional nurses dedicated to providing health care to underserved populations and to provide an opportunity for nurses to consider a career in America's underserved areas. The program offers registered nurses substantial economic assistance to repay their educational loans in exchange for service to the underserved in eligible facilities. All NELRP participants must enter into a contract agreeing to providefull-time employment in an approved eligible health facility for 2-3 years. In return, the NELRP will pay 60% of the participants total qualifying loan balance for 2 years or 85% of the participant's total qualifying loan balance for 3 years.

Nurse Faculty Workforce Initiate Award

This award is a monetary reimbursement of qualified tuition, books, and materials for graduate nursing nursing students. Students must be enrolled in an approved program, be in good academic standing, and intend to teach full-time in a South Carolina nursing program (PN, ADN, BSN, MSN, MN, PhD) for 2 years upon graduation. Recipients must meet with a faculty mentor throughout the year, attend one seminar in Columbia, SC, and submit quarterly reports on academic progress and employment status for up to three years after graduation.

South Carolina Nurses Foundation Undergraduate Scholarship

The selected recipient must be a current resident of South Carolina, enrolled in a BSN program in South Carolina at the junior or senior level, have a 3.0 GPA or better, be in financial need, intend to seek employment in South Carolina, and submit two references from a faculty member of the school in which the student is enrolled. Applications are generally available during the spring semester from the South Carolina Nurses Association.

Palmetto Gold Scholarship

The Palmetto Gold Nurse Recognition and Scholarship Program is designed to salute South Carolina nurses for excellence in practice and to support nursing education with scholarships. The scholarship is administered through the South Carolina Nurses Foundation. One student from each of the twenty-two nursing programs will receive a $1000 scholarship. The Dean (or their designee) is responsible for nominating a student for this scholarship.

Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program

Students from low-income families can now get additional financial assistance through a new scholarship from The Sallie Mae Fund. The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program will supplement financial aid packages for low-income students by providing funds to cover financial need not met through typical financial aid channels including grants, work-study, loans and other scholarships.

Scholarship America will administer the scholarship as part of the
Project Access Initiative. The scholarship will supplement the financial aid package - not substitute for aid - received from an institution. Awards of up to $3800 will be made payable to the school on behalf of the student.

Students must demonstrate financial need of more than $1000 without loans, have a combined family income of $30,00 or less, and have a cumulative grade point average between 2.5 and 3.0 or equivalent.

Eligible students must submit both a copy of the student application and financial aid administrator form by May 31 to be considered for The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program. Applications for The Sallie Mae Fund Unmet Need Scholarship Program and more information on

Talbot's Women’s Scholarship Fund

Recipients must be women currently residing in the United States, have earned their high school diploma or GED on or before September 1992, enrolled in a full or part-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four year university, and have at least two semesters (or a minimum of 24 credit hours) remaining to complete their undergraduate degree. Students with a previously earned bachelor’s degree are not eligible to apply.

Tylenol Scholarship

The makers of Tylenol Family of Products will award ten $10,000
scholarships and 150 $1000 scholarships for higher education to students that demonstrate leadership in community activities and school activities and who intend to major in areas that will lead to health related fields.

You may apply to the Tylenol Scholarship if you will be attending
undergraduate or graduate school at an accredited college or university. You should have one-two years of school remaining.

USA  Funds Access to Education Scholarships

USA Funds Access to Education Scholarships offers financial support to students with economic need. Up to 50

percent of awards are targeted to members of ethnic minority groups or individuals with physical disabilities.

Scholarships are awarded based on the applicant's past academic performance and future potential, leadership and
participation in school and community activities, work experience, career and educational aspirations and goals, unusual personal or family circumstances.
