  1. Unwanted pregnancy: pilot work to examine unwanted pregnancy in relation to pregnancy behaviors (smoking, alcohol, nutrition, exercise), prenatal care, and maternal-fetal attachment as well as the effect of social support on unwanted pregnancy.
  2. I have an ongoing opportunity for students interested in maternal and child health to utilize several university and state databases and conduct secondary data analysis. The expected student outcome would be a databased research article.
  3. Web-based peer support for African American pregnant women (completed  R15 and submitting R01 for multi-site project).

Diabetes, hypertension, health disparities (African Americans), community health and coalition development, provider/systems change, patient education

Current Research

  1. REACH 2010: Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health: Current funding by CDC for about 1 million per year to document and decrease disparities in African Americans with diabetes living in Charleston and Georgetown counties.  The focus in on community development, empowerment, and education for diabetes, health systems changes related to access, care, and education and coalition power, expansion, advocacy and sustainability.  Currently, the REACH faculty and staff are working with 11 different clinical sites.
  2. Non-Emergent Emergency Department Use by People with Diabetes: Funded by NINR to examine emergency department (ED)use for "ambulatory sensitive conditions" related to diabetes.  This study uses a qualitative grounded theory approach to examine use of ED from the perspective of the patient and includes an audit of prior health systems usage and quality of care received. The goal is build a model related to non-emergent use of emergency medical care.
  3. Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina Outreach: Our goal is to improve diabetes outcomes for South Carolinians with diabetes, through clinical care and health systems change, community outreach, and surveillance of diabetes related problems, care, and Outcomes.
  4. Dr. Jenkins and her colleagues have developed valid and reliable instruments for surveying and evaluating health provider practices, diabetes self-management, and community coalition development.  Logic modeling is used for program development, implementation, and evaluation.

Current Research

  1. Study of skin temperature variability of lower legs of lower legs of adults 45 years of age with chronic venous disorders, measured with a wireless temperature data logger for minute-to-minute variation and a handheld infrared thermometer for day-to-day variation.
  2. Pilot study of the impact of two cryotherapy interventions on patient outcomes (reduce skin temperature, blood flow, leg discomforts, and to improve quality of life and mobility) in chronic venous disorders.

Pediatric epilepsy, chronic illness issues and impact on child/family.

Current Research

  1. South Carolina Epidemiological Studies of Epilepsy and Seizure Disorder (SCESESD): co-investigator, funded by the CDC for three years to estimate the incidence and prevalence of epilepsy in a state population and to describe the distribution of epilepsy cases by etiology and seizure type.
  2. South Carolina Health Outcome Project on Epilepsy (SC HOPE): co-investigator, funded by the CDC to start in 2005 to look at epilepsy outcomes for patients with epilepsy in the state of South Carolina with the goal of improving public health and health care practices that will improve the lives of people with epilepsy, especially the socioeconomically disadvantaged and those receiving substandard healthcare.
  3. South Carolina Traumatic Brain Injury Surveillance for Prevalence of Epilepsy: assisting with data collection and abstraction tool development to review prevalence and incidence of epilepsy in patients with history of TBI. Funded by the CDC as a sub-project of the South Carolina Traumatic Brain Injury Surveillance Project.
  4. Children's Observations and Perceptions of Epilepsy (COPE): co-PI, funded by Epilepsy Foundation Targeted Initiative for Mood Disorders. Goals: to test the hypothesis that depressive symptoms may be explained by the mechanisms of learned hopelessness and self-efficacy in children and adolescents with epilepsy; to examine children's use of coping skills and their relationship to depressive symptoms.
  5. Coping Openly and Personally with Epilepsy: A Program for Youth and Caregivers. Co-PI, funded by Parents Against Childhood Epilepsy. Goals: to develop and pilot an evidence based intervention for treating psychosocial issues associated with childhood epilepsy.
