Program Descriptions The intent of this program is to provide Spanish-speaking mothers and their 3-year old children an active, fun and educational experience. The program meets two days a week; Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 am to noon. As the children are developing their gross motor skills, fine motor skills, speech and language, cognitive and social abilities, their mothers are focusing on learning English as a Second Language, computer skills and participating in health classes. Funded by The Duke Endowment, this community-based program addresses domestic violence issues by serving as a resource for primary care providers, local organizations and educational entities. Some of the funding has been utilized to film a DVD on intimate partner violence (IPV). Additionally, HHI faculty and consultants are available for community workshops on domestic violence. For more information on ordering the DVD in English or in Spanish or scheduling a workshop, please contact Carol Whelan at (843) 792-2651. Evidence-based research and targeted programming are major components of this initiative.
HHI faculty and students work with Communities in Schools, parents, local libraries and schools to reduce risk-taking behaviors in adolescents. Some activities include community forums on key health issues, programs on healthy choices addressing substance abuse, STDs, pregnancy prevention, and teen dating violence.
Faculty and students collaborate with a variety of community organizations providing health promotion and activities in different venues: churches, schools and Head Start programs, health fairs and health centers.
