She received her bachelor and masters degrees in nursing from the University of South Carolina. Her doctorate, which she received from Boston University, is in nursing with a cognate focus in history and philosophy. Dr. King is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the American Public Health Association, the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators (ACHNE), the American Association for the History of Nursing, and is an associate member of the Association of State and Territorial Directors of Nursing. She has been an active member of these professional organizations, serving on committees, task forces, the boards of directors, and is Past-President of ACHNE and past Chair of the Quad Council of Public Health Nursing organizations. Additionally, she has been involved with initiatives addressing public health nursing workforce issues. She was invited to participate with Wald Trek: Public Health Nursing Workforce Development project and to serve as an expert panel member on curriculum development for a HRSA and CDC sponsored workshop on public health workforce development. She has been a manuscript reviewer for Public Health Nursing since 1994. | | Dr. King has been at the Medical University since 1999, where she teaches courses in community/population health in the baccalaureate and masters programs, and knowledge development at the doctoral level. In addition to her teaching activities in the CON, Dr. King was the nursing faculty in the MUSC Presidential Scholars program (2000-2003), where she served on the planning and evaluation teams, as well as faculty advisor to small groups of interdisciplinary students. Dr. King has had a varied and interesting academic career, having previously held appointments at the University of Kentucky where she worked in a rural Appalachian community, the University of Virginia, and Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. | Dr. King’s research interests include the history of nursing, family caregiving, and community interventions in chronic disease management. Her scholarly publications address a broad range of topics related to teaching, practice and research. |
