| Course Overview This program is designed as an interactive, online course to prepare Advanced Practice Nurses and other Healthcare Professionals with the skills to work as a Healthcare Educator. A master's degree is the minimum degree requirement for eligibility to take the program. At the end of program the participants will: 1. Develop educational programs and course curriculum 2. Effectively use technology in teaching 3. Assess learner needs 4. Evaluate educational programs 5. Utilize effective instructional methods in the education of healthcare students and patients.
The program includes three (3) courses that may be taken in any order and the courses will be repeated on an ongoing basis. The courses are: NURSCE 300 - Curriculum Development NURSCE 301 - Technology in Education NURSCE 302 - Instructional Processes Each course will award 45 Contact Hours for nurses and 37.5 CEUs for other healthcare professionals. At the completion of all three courses, participants will be awarded a continuing education certificate of successful completion. Nurses will also be eligible to take the NLN Nurse Educator Certification exam and will be awarded the credential CNE (Certified Nurse Educator). Cost: $550.00 per course from August 2006 to May 2007. What the Course is Like Reading assignments are discussed in a Discussion Board forum. Mini lectures are posted for each module. | NURSCE 300 - Curriculum Development Aug 7-Sept 15, 2006 | The focus of this course is on curriculum development for health related courses and program of study. Theories and models of curriculum devleopment are explored, and educational needs assessment is conducted. Students develop an educational program using design methodology, learning characteristics, program objectives, instructional methods, and evaluation methods. Course Content/Modules: (Each module will be completed within one (1) week) Module 1 Title: Philosophy of Education Objective: Examine existing philosophies and develop a personal philosophy of education Module 2 Title: Needs Assessment and Learning Characteristics Objective: Assess an educational need, identify learnings and learner characteristics Module 3 Title: Instructional Design Objectives: Examine various instructional designs, develop an instructional design for an educational program Module 4 Title: Learning Objectives and Outcomes Objectives: Examine objectives targeting different levels of learning domains: cognitive, psychomotor, and effecive; create a lesson plan (to include objectives, content outline, and outcome measures) for an educational program or instructional unit. Module 5 Title: Instructional Methods and Teaching Strategies Objectives: Examine various instructional methods and identify effective methods for individual learning needs; discuss differences in traditional and alternative instructional methods (Classroom, Distance Education, and Online methods). Module 6 Title: Program Evaluation Objectives: Examine various methods of evaluation; develop an evaluation plan for an identified Educational Program | NURSCE 301 - Technology in Education Oct 9-Nov 17, 2006 | The focus of this course is on the development of a variety of teaching methodologies to enhance learning outcomes of various populations. Students examine various computer technologies to support educational principles, theories, and instructional processes. Students identify effective theoretical models to guide integration of technology into educational programs and evaluate instructional software. Students develop components of an online educational program (homepage, syllabus, lecture, and presentation). Course Content/Modules: Module 1 Title:Theoretical Frameworks and Educational Principles Objectives: Examine various theoretical frameworks and educational principles for using technology in health care education. (Week 1) Module 2 Title: Computer Technologies Objectives: Identify and analyze various instructional software; create a homepage within WebCT format; discuss how principles and theories of learning relate to the use of computer technology in the classroom. (Week 2) Module 3 Title: Components of Online Teaching Objectives: Develop a syllabus for use with online teaching; develop a lecture to be used in a web-based course; create an online presentation; manage a chat session; create an online quiz. (Weeks 3, 4, & 5) Module 4 Title: Evaluation of Online Teaching Objectives: Examine various methods of evaluating online courses and programs; identify ways of evaluating learning outcomes of online students.(Week 6) | NURSCE 302 - Course: Instructional Processes Apr 2-May 11, 2007 | The focus of this course is on the development and use of a variety of teaching methodologies to enhance learning of various populations (academic students, student of continuing education programs, staff in health care provider settings, and client/families). Within the course, students examine educational principles, theories, and instructional processes for the development, implementation, and evaluation of educational program and instructional units. Students work with a qualified preceptor and submit a critique of a videotape or audiotape of their teaching skills. Course Content/Modules Module 1 Title: Principles and Theories of Education Objectives: Examine various principles and theories of education; discuss the role of principles and theories in the development of educational programs/instructional units. (Week 1) Module 2 Title: Teaching Methodologies Objectives: Discuss various teaching methodologies; work with a preceptor to identify a learning population and learner need; identify appropriate teaching methodologies for the identified population and learner need. (Week 2) Module 3 Title: Instructional Unit Content Objectives: Develop a lesson plan (objectives, content, teaching methods, and evaluation) for the identified learner need; discuss advantages/disadvantages of teaching methodologies related to the identified learners. (Week 3) Module 4 Title: Instructional Processes Objectives: Implement lesson plan with the identified learners. (Instruction will be audio or video taped and critiqued by the student and by the preceptor.) (Weeks 4 & 5) Module 5 Title: Evaluation of Instructional Processes Objectives: Evaluate effectiveness of instructional processes on learner outcomes; discuss various methods of evaluation. | Method of Learning This course is in an interactive, web-based format and uses the Internet and other resources. Students will be required to complete assignments which include scholarly papers, learning team assignment and class discussion. Evaluation and Successful Completion of Course All students must satisfactorily complete of all course requirements as determined by the course faculty. Students MUST complete a course evaluation for nursing accreditation requirements at the end of each course. There is a form listed as “Quiz” for this purpose at the end of each course. It is easily completed within minutes. Once all the course work requirements and CE evaluation forms are completed, the instructor will notify the CE department to generate and mail your CE certificates for the courses.
