Faith Development throughout Life

Overview

A series of short courses designed to help observe and support faith development within the context of the community of the congregation.  All students take a course covering the overview of faith development, followed by 2-4 courses on faith development in specific age groups within the congregation.  Students may take any of the courses that are relevant to their practices, after they take the overview of faith development.

NURSCE-201  Theoretical Foundations of Faith Development
(4 contact hours)
This course introduces faith development throuhout the life span, based primarily on the theoretical model of James Fowler and John Westerhoff.  His understanding of faith development is based on the works of Piaget, Erikson and Kohlberg and their theories of cognitive, psychological and moral development, respectively.

What this course is like:  This course is organized by the stages of faith development provided by James Fowler, and secondly, by John Westerhoff.  It is designed to help students have an overview of faith development throughtout life.  There are resources, activities and you may e-mail the teachers if you would like.  Journaling about issues that require thought, and for answering questions, is one technique that is used.

Course Objectives:

  1. Identify six stages of faith development accourding to Fowler.
  2. Identify four stages of faith development according to Westerhoff.
  3. Describe how faith frows in the context of relationship.

NURSCE-202
Experienced Faith:  Infancy to 3 Years
(2 contact hours)
These are the early years, the years in which we receive faith from those who nurture us, and become our model for faith.  This is an impressionable period of life, a time when the infant and young child is dependent on others.

What this course is like:  This course is organized by stages of faith development provided by John Westerhoff.  It follows the course on theoretical development of faith throught life, and uses that information but does not repeat it.  It is designed to help students understand faith development, and develop programs to help children in the congregation in this stage of life.  There are resources, activities and you may e-mail the teachers if you would like.  Journaling about issues that require thought, and for answering questions, is one techique that is used.

Course Objectives:

  1. Promote the faith dvelopment of children to age 3 appropriately.
  2. Assist the congregation to support the faith development of children to age 3.
  3. Provide an environment which is conducive to the wholistic growth of children.

NURSCE-206  Theological Reflection
(2 contact hours)
This course presents an overview of theological reflection.  Theological reflection is the process of exploring individual and corporate faith experience.  In the process of reflection, the individual may expand an understanding of one's own experience of the religious tradition of the congregation.  The process leads to new truth and deeper meaning in life.

What this course is like:  This course is divided into two sections.  The first is theoretical information about the development of theological reflection, a process which can be effective for both individuals and groups.  It is interestingly written using stories to illustrate the process.  The second part is practical, helping the individual to practice the art.

Course Objectives:

  1. Define theological reflection.
  2. Compare the processes of group and individual theological reflection.
  3. Apply theological reflection theory to a personal experience.

Coming later in 2008

NURSCE-203  Affiliative Faith:  Childhood
(2 contact hours)
Early in this stage the child develops and acquires beliefs, values and faith from those who care for him/her.  Later, the child moves into a phase of testing.  The influence of (and conformity to) peers become key drives in forming one's faith during the latter part of this stage of development.

NURSCE-204  Searching Faith:  Young Adulthood
(2 contact hours)
This stage may occur as early as adolescence or into middle age.  It is in this stage one seriously begins to search for personal answers, beyond the group.

NURSCE-205  Mature Faith:  Adulthood
(2 contact hours)
The person who achieves "owned faith" is one who has reoriented his or her life to include personal ownership of beliefs and responsiblity for ones practices of faith.  This person is focused beyond self, beyond isolation and toward a sense of the Transcendent.

Cost: $10.00 per Contact Hour

Take advantage of the learning environment -- check out the active Internet links provided in the notes!

Evaluation and Successful Completion of Course

Regular journaling, as directed in the lessons, will aid in evaluation and completion of the course. At the end of the course, the student will e-mail two examples of journal entries to the instructor. You may choose any two that you are comfortable sharing.

Students MUST complete a course evaluation at the end of the course, for nursing accreditation requirements. There is a form for this purpose at the end of the lessons, listed as a quiz. It is easily completed within minutes.

Once the journal entries and CE evaluation form is completed, the instructor will instruct the CE department to generate and mail your CE certificate for the course. Non-nurse participants will receive a certificate of completion.
