College of Nursing Accomplishments 2006-2007 Organizational - Enrollment at maximum capacity for BSN, MSN and PhD programs, increasing 35% since 2002-2003.
- 70% of faculty earned merit for teaching excellence.
- Continued to expand online learning to include 2 additional masters degree specialty programs and placing the PhD program entirely online.
- Applied emerging educational technology, such as podcasting and
videoconferencing to nursing programs. - Engaged in active planning to create the Simulated Clinical Laboratory with renovations due to begin summer of 2007.
- Assumed leadership in a statewide nursing simulation collaborative to develop clinical simulation models for nursing courses.
- 32% of faculty obtained grant funding.
- 13% of faculty elected to national leadership positions.
- Increased numbers of students and research activities integrated in CON practice sites.
- Hired 3 new faculty and provided mentorship for their development.
- Established a Diversity Task Force to address ways to increase diversity within the College.Participated in formulating the South Carolina One Voice One Plan to address the nursing shortage which was submitted to the legislature and passed into law as the SC Critical Needs Nursing Initiative bill.
- Assumed membership in the Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) Nursing Research Committee and accepted the position as Chair.
Education - Maintained NCLEX pass rates at 92% for 2006.
- Obtained a 100% pass rate for certification exams in NMW, ANP, FNP, PNP, NNP and PMNNP tracks.
- Reached all-time high of $285,406 for scholarship awards.
- Placed PhD program online.
- Enrolled students in the joint MSN/MBA program collaborative with the University of South Carolina.
- Developed a strategic plan for online programs.
- Conducted an audit for leadership content in graduate core courses.
Surveyed students regarding leadership activities and placed information on CON website. - Established a nursing network within Health Sciences South Carolina (HSSC) to work on a shared simulation curriculum.
- Developed annual undergraduate modified clinical faculty meeting and initiated WebCT site for resources for modified clinical faculty.
- Implemented changes in RN-BSN and RN-MSN programs of study to promote the effective use of faculty and clinical resources.
- Initiated process for conducting MSN student exit surveys electronically for evaluation of program outcomes and student satisfaction.
Research - Increased NIH applications from two in 2003-04 to three in 2004-05, to four in 2005-06, to nine in 2006-2007.
- Submitted and received funding for first clinical trial (Kelechi).
- Received federal funding for two proposals submitted by doctoral students. A third doctoral student also received external funding.
- Solidified the infrastructure of the research office including addition of permanent methodological and statistical support.
Increased successful publications that were facilitated through the research office. - Participated in the CTSA initiative and received funding as Co-Investigator on one pilot project.
- Supported the College of Nursing’s involvement in Health Sciences
- South Carolina (HSSC) – Nursing Research Consortium.
- Created the College of Nursing’s Center for Community Health Partnerships:
Practice - Increased scholarship and research activities by 50% in practice initiatives.
- Increased student clinical experiences in practice initiatives by 39%.
- Developed online listing of existing community partnerships with plans to link to future website for College of Nursing’s Center for Community Health Partnerships.
- Submitted two foundation grants and one state grant to expand funding for Health 1st. Health 1st and Employee Health Services coordinated efforts to prevent workplace injuries through educational activities and policy initiatives.
- Transferred Employee Health Services and Health 1st to Risk Management for better efficiency of operations.
- Completed trial of national distribution of specific continuing education product line, resulting in less than a 10% increase in revenue over revenue anticipated with internal distribution plan.
- Completed re-accreditation report for Wound Care Program. Site visit scheduled for August 24, 2007.
Faculty - Promoted one faculty to associate professor.
- Tenure was received by two faculty.
- Reallocated faculty effort and staff responsibilities to align organization resources with strategic goals.
- Maximized faculty time by refining workload policy and streamlined evaluation process.
- Initiated incentive plan to promote scholarship and leadership.
- Offered three faculty development workshops on online teaching strategies.
- Earned local, state, and national recognition for excellence through receipt of 17 awards.
College of Nursing Goals 2007-2008 Organizational
- Pursue funding with targeted constituencies to replace previous nursing collaborative funding.
- Open the simulated clinical laboratory and incorporate simulation opportunities into curriculum.
- Increase faculty’s research productivity and academic scholarship.
- Promote the organizational climate of the CON by enhancing diversity and mentorship.
- Increase the visibility of the CON as it celebrates its 125th anniversary.
- Collaborate with nurses across the state to address nursing workforce issues in SC.
Education - Place nurse midwifery program online Fall 2007.
- Explore feasibility of developing and implementing a DNP program.
- Maintain at least 90% NCLEX-RN pass rate.
- Conduct annual BSN and MSN survey of alumni who graduated 1 & 5 years previously.
- Develop survey and establish process for surveying employee satisfaction of BSN and MSN alumni.
- Complete development of written MSN preceptor guide and create MSN clinical preceptor website.
- Continue development and refinement of simulation content modules for undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Review and revise the teaching peer review process.
Research - Increase funding of NIH applications from two to four proposals.
Submit MUSC Center Proposal and align grant submission and publications with Center whenever possible. - Continue faculty development and support for research through mentoring, review, and facilitation of proposals and publications.
- Increase research component of all training and programmatic proposals submitted.
- Continue doctoral student funding applications with diversification of funding sources.
- Recruit additional research track faculty.
- Refine evaluation instruments, if needed, disseminate, and act upon evaluation data.
- Update website and material as needed.
Practice - Increase recruitment of minority faculty in practice initiatives.
- Receive re-accreditation from the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society (WOC) for the Wound Care Program.
- Maintain the College of Nursing Continuing Education Division with a minimum of cost recovery plus 20%.
- Continue to increase scholarship and research activities associated with College of Nursing practice initiatives.
- Establish principles for interacting with community partners to assist with the development of the College of Nursing’s Center for Community Health Partnerships.
Faculty - Develop a cadre of online faculty with national recognition for quality and expertise in online teaching.
- Continue to link faculty expertise with appropriate focal areas.
Increase research capacity by recruiting and hiring a junior researcher and a senior researcher. - Evaluate and revise By-Laws of the Faculty Assembly to reflect efficient use of faculty time in self-governance.
- Approve and implement a plan to provide mentoring across the career continuum.
- Revise incentive plan for rewarding faculty scholarship and leadership based on recommendations from first year evaluation report.
- Approve and implement proposal for targeted organizational culture behavior change.
