The College of Nursing is an integral part of the Medical University of South Carolina which is the only academic Health Science Center in the state. Program Benefits
This graduate program prepares nurses for advanced practice as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP). Courses focus on the management of primary and intensive care of the high-risk neonate. Care and management of infants and children up to the age of 2 is included. Graduates of this program are eligible to take the NCC national certifying exam and become credentialed as a certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP). Career Opportunities Certified Neonatal Nurse Practitioners practice as nurse practitioners in a variety of settings including: Level I nurseries and newborn facilities, Level II and III neonatal intensive care nurseries, Private Practice and Follow-up clinics. A student must gain 2 years experience in neonatal intensive care nursing before graduation from the program. This is a requirement for certification. - 1 year of experience in a NNP Level III NICU is required. A total of 2 years is required before graduation from the program.
Admission Options Registered nurses (RN) with a BSN degree are admitted to the Masters Program and graduate with a MSN. This program requires 18 months of full time study.
This option is for registered nurses (RN) with a Diploma in Nursing or an A.D.N. At least 60 semester hours of prerequisite classes must be completed before starting the RN-MSN program. Once admitted to the RN-MSN program, it requires completion of several undergraduate courses before progressing to the MSN coursework. Students graduate with a MSN, bypassing the BSN. This program requires 18 months of full time study or a part-time option is also available and must be completed within 5 years. Nurses with 2 years Level III experience and a Master's degree can take the NNP portion of the program to obtain an NNP certification. This program requires 18 months of full time study. The application deadline is February 1st for fall admission and September 15th for spring admission (excluding ANP and FNP tracks). Late applicants may be considered upon space availability. Before applying for Spring, applicants should contact the program coordinator regarding space availability.
| Clinical experiences for students are individually arranged and take place in a variety of settings under the supervision of certified neonatal nurse practitioners. Students must have access to a level III nursery for clinical experiences. Students living in South Carolina can complete clinical requirements in Charleston, Greenville, Columbia or Florence. All students must have a preceptor and facility agreement before starting the program. Criminal Background Check AND dRUG sCREEN
Upon matriculation, all College of Nursing students will be required to undergo a criminal background check and complete a drug screen.
