Adult Health Nurse Practitioner

The College of Nursing is an integral part of the Medical University of South Carolina which is the only academic Health Science Center in the state. We are widely recognized for providing a supportive learning environment that has a low student to faculty ratio, expert faculty and preceptors as well as highly successful complex clinical settings. Students are encouraged to personalize their program of study in the context of our multi-focal Adult Health Nurse Practitioner program.

Program Benefits

This graduate program prepares Advanced Practice Nurses for primary ambulatory and population-based care. Graduates of this program are prepared to provide care for adults with common acute and chronic health conditions. Health promotion and disease prevention as well as teaching and counseling of individuals, families and groups are emphasized. The option to specialize in palliative care is available.

Graduates are eligible to obtain national certification as an Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP).

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Nurse Practitioners have the opportunity to be employed in a wide variety of settings such as: community health clinics, rural health clinics, physician offices, public health departments, hospitals, home health agencies, urgent care/emergency rooms, specialty areas, Armed Forces and Veterans’ Administration facilities and schools of nursing.

Post BSN
Registered nurses (RN) with a BSN degree are admitted to the Masters Program and graduate with a MSN.

Post MSN
Registered nurses (RN) with a BSN and MSN degree are admitted to the Masters Program and graduate with a second Masters in a new area of specialization.

Admission Requirements

APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2010 WILL BE AVAILABLE AFTER JULY 1, 2009

  • BSN from a nationally accredited program
  • Nursing grade point average (NSG-GPA) of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Undergraduate Cumulative (CUM-GPA) GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale 
  • Undergraduate Level Statistics Course
  • Unencumbered, active RN License in state where practicums will be conducted 
  • 3 Confidential References
  • Current CV or resume 
  • 1 page essay
  • Interview if requested

Application Deadline

The application deadline is February 1st for fall admission.  Late applicants may be considered upon space availability.

Clinical Experiences

Precepted clinical experieces are individually arranged.  Adult Nurse Practitioner students complete a minimum of 540 hours with an assigned clinical preceptor. Students may complete a selected number of hours in a specialty area if desired.  Students may complete clinical in approved local sites. If a local preceptor is not available, students may have to travel to a clinical site.


Criminal Background Check AND dRUG sCREEN

Upon matriculation, all College of Nursing students will be required to undergo a criminal background check and complete a drug screen.

Full Time/Part-Time Programs of Study

Full time and part-time programs of study are avaiable. An individual program plan of study is completed at the time of admission into the program.


Technology

The MUSC College of Nursing is committed to increasing the use of technology in nursing education. The campus program utilizes various forms of online education including WebCT classes, chats, discussion groups and video conferencing. To enhance your educational experience, the College of Nursing offers orientation and assistance in the use of technology and online education. Accreditation

The College of Nursing Undergraduate and Graduate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education. The Undergraduate program is approved by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation, Board of Nursing.
