Research Interests:

The impact of hearing impairment and aging on the ability to process sound and understand speech is the focus of this research program. Changes in the inner ear resulting from hearing impairment and/or aging may affect the ear's ability to analyze fast-changing temporal and frequency patterns speech and may make it difficult to filter out the disturbing effects of background noises. Thus in addition to a reduction in the loudness of sounds due to hearing loss, changes in sound processing further reduces the ability to understand speech, especially in noisy environments - a common complaint of individuals with hearing loss.
