| | 2006-2007 HIGHLIGHTS
Accomplishments - During the 2006-2007 academic year, 859 MUSC students donated 12,467 hours to over 166 Lowcountry agencies.
- Since fall 1993, MUSC GIVES BACK has served more than 4998 volunteers representing all six MUSC Colleges, who participated in over 2700 events and projects, contributing more than 150,567.6 hours of volunteer support to benefit non-profit agencies and community outreach programs.
- 368 student volunteers were recognized for contributing at least 15 hours of volunteer service. The top individual student volunteer for each college was identified including a medical student for donating more than 343 hours of local service.
- Awarded the eleventh annual MUSC GIVES BACK Community Volunteer Award to six student organizations who made exceptional volunteer contributions within the Tri-County area.
2006-2007 Student Highlights - Female students completed training with People Against Rape to advocate for victims of sexual assault.
- Medical students discussed risk factors to help older public school students understand the causes of sexually transmitted diseases.
- Many future health professionals served as positive role models to disadvantaged youth through tutoring or mentoring programs.
- Members of the University Student Government Association volunteered with Water Missions International and conducted a beautification project at Mitchell Elementary School.
- MUSC students chaperoned nearly 150 emotionally or physically challenged children from our community during the Annual Holiday Tree Lighting in the Horseshoe.
- College of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and PT students supported The C.A.R.E.S. Clinic, which is dedicated to providing healthcare needs of the uninsured patients of Greater Charleston Metropolitan area and the homeless population at Crisis Ministries.
- The Medical Student Ophthalmology Society supports Fight for Sight, a mobile eye clinic that provides comprehensive eye exams for the low-income elderly.
- Nursing students spent time with Hospice of Charleston and participated with MUSC’s Junior Doctors of Health Program at Fraser Elementary School.
- PT and OT students served as coaches and supporters for the Special Olympics Games and supervised disabled children participating in a therapeutic horseback-riding program.
- PT students raised over $1900 to set up the first Olympic Town for the Area 6 Special Olympics.
- The student Association of Black Health Professionals (CHP) selected to fund-raise and support Halos and Elderlink.
- Students from all six colleges supported two on-campus American Red Cross Blood and Bone Marrow Drives.
- Graduate Studies students collected donations for The Looking Glass in Hollings Cancer Center and assisted with the construction of three houses with Habitat for Humanity on John’s Island.
- College of Dental Medicine students assisted at the St. Matthew Baptist Church Dental Clinic, Give Kids a Smile Day, Special Olympics Special Smiles, and Smiles for a Lifetime Dental Clinic.
- Pharmacy students prepared and served family-style meals to patients and families staying at The American Cancer Society’s Hope Lodge, assisted with the Harvest Free Medical Clinic, and Operation Immunization.
- For the thirteenth year, College of Medicine Freshmen and sophomores provided companionship and friendship to severely emotionally disturbed young boys at Windwood Home for Children.
- Continued two annual intercollegiate service initiatives, MUSC World Aids Day and a MLK Not a Day Off but a Day On Health Information Fair with Our Lady of Mercy on John’s Island.
