Have you ever felt, while reading a newspaper or talking with friends
about current events, that “something ought to be done about that”?
Things can be different.
You can be part of the change. You can dream and develop a vision
and a plan of action. Gandhi wrote, “We must be the change we wish to see.”
I agree.
I came to this idea in 1987 when I dreamed of creating an organization
that would strengthen women. The idea became a passion, and I worked with others
to put together The Global Fund for Women.
In developing The Global Fund, I learned three steps to creating
change:
First, you must dare to dream of positive change and then clarify
your vision and purpose. Be clear about what you hope to do and why. As you dream
of creating a program that will change the world, people may suggest that you
are unrealistic or idealistic. Never mind. Major change seldom occurs without
unrealistic ideas. Your dream will serve to galvanize others. If people say that
your dream is too big or can’t be done, don’t be burdened by such
negative thoughts. Instead, address the central issue that they raise and think
positively.
Second, nurture your ideas for change. Think not only of what you
want to do but the way you want to do it: what is the nature of the program or
team that you want to build? Do you want it to be an idea factory? If so, seek
fresh perspectives. Do you want it to be a calm and gentle place? If so, help
people to feel safe and calm. Are you working on issues of social justice? If
so, ensure that your practices are based on respect, trust, and compassion. The
way you do your work is as important as what you do.
Third, turn your dream into reality. As Abdu’l-Baha wrote, “The wrong in the world continues just because people talk only of their
ideals and do not strive to put them into practice.” You need to take specific
actions to give reality to your dreams.
Meet with friends and talk about your vision for change. Record your
ideas. Take on different roles and responsibilities, deciding when and where you
will meet and what programs you will undertake. Begin as volunteers until you
need to hire people to run the project.
I invite you to start creating change. No beginning is too small. PE
