Development of genomics tools. The goal of the Tomkins lab at the Clemson University Genomics Institute is to develop and implement genomics-based strategies and tools for the discovery, isolation, comparison and characterization of agriculturally and environmentally important genes and genomic regions. We work on plant, animal, and microbial genomes of importance to agriculture, human health, and the environment. The Clemson University Genomics Institute has established an efficient group of scientists focusing on: 1) Construction and maintenance of high quality BAC libraries. 2) Production and distribution of high-density hybridization filters for screening BAC and EST libraries. 3) Positional cloning and functional analysis of important genes. 4) Physical mapping of whole genomes, chromosomes, and targeted genomic regions with BAC clones. 5) Sequencing of BAC contigs, BAC ends, and ESTs. 6) Functional analysis of genomes via high-throughput mutagenesis systems. 7) Comparative analyses of whole genomes and selected genomic regions. 8) Undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral training in genomics. |
