Research:
Sub-lethal toxicological effects of environmental contaminants. We assess various health effects depending on the contaminant and endpoints often include the immune, endocrine, metabolic, and nervous systems. Clearly, there is a link between marine/wildlife health and human health that can be assessed using sentential wildlife species. In fact, effects in wildlife are often our first clue to potential effects on human health. Current research directions include children’s environmental health, sea turtle health and marine mammal health in relation to contaminant exposure utilizing both in vitro and in vivo approaches.  Various contaminants are being assessed but current focuses are on PFOS, PBDEs, and TCE.
