Research:
The focus of my research is to develop
peptide tandem mass spectral libraries and other novel bioinformatics tools
to reliably identify proteins from complex mixtures. High throughput two-dimensional separation
techniques coupled with tandem mass spectrometry are used to generate data
for analysis. Applications of this
work include identifying proteins expressed by marine organisms during disease
or in response to environmental stress.
These protein biomarkers may be used for the early detection and
treatment of disease.
Current projects include: 1)
Studying changes in protein expression in
pygmy sperm whales with cardiomyopathy. 2)
Identification of antimicrobial peptides
in blue crabs. 3)
Identifying the proteins expressed by
bacteria at elevated ocean temperatures and their role in coral disease. |
