| Research:
Integration of physiological and molecular approaches to understanding the mechanisms involved in the regulation of renal function in elasmobranch fish and in mammals. Our research with elasmobranchs is focused on the renal mechanisms involved in volume- and osmo-regulation, specifically the role of urea transporters and aquaporins. Recent studies have involved the determination of parameters of renal function in stingrays, as well as, the cloning and identification of several isoforms of urea transporters from batoid elasmobranchs. New projects include the identification of sites within the kidney at which urea transporter gene and protein expression occurs. |
