Specialist recognized 20 years later for first endovascular technique

Dr. Claudio
SchonholzWe congratulate Dr. Claudio Schönholz on this recognition of his work!

From Endovascular Today:

Endovascular Today spoke with Dr. Schönholz and the other specialists involved in the creation of this lifesaving treatment technique.

"The bottom line is that EVAR is less Cover of Endovascular Todayinvasive and better tolerated by patients. "Of course, there are still some anatomic limitations," said Schönholz, "but even ruptured AAAs are being treated more and more by the endovascular approach." In Schönholz's group at MUSC, 80% of cases are treated with EVAR, "and this is not unique to just the United States -- it is around the world. Many practitioners are using just EVAR whenever they can."'  Read the whole story here.

Also, from MUSC's Catalyst newspaper:

"The first endovascular treatment of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (EVAR) in North America was celebrated during the 39th annual VEITH symposium, a conference supporting vascular surgeons and other specialists recognizing new developments in clinical practice and research. The procedure was performed Nov. 23, 1992. Schönholz was joined by the procedure team of Juan Parodi, M.D., Frank J. Veith, M.D., Michael L. Marin, M.D., and Jacob Cynamon, M.D.

The story of how this technique was developed and adopted in the U.S. is a testament to the forward thinking and collaborative investigators who sought to expand the treatment options available to their patients." Read the whole story here.

The MUSC hospital is home to the Department of Radiology and Radiological Science, a modern well equipped department including General Radiology and Imaging with 6 CT scanners and 5 MRI machines, Nuclear Medicine, and Ultrasound as well as the Division of Vascular & Interventional Radiology. The Department of Radiology was one of the first in the country to go filmless using a digital PACS system.  It is currently implementing the voice recognition technology and has just opened an imaging laboratory for small animals.

The division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology is located in the two buildings, at the main hospital and at the ART. The facility includes four angio suites and a 64-slice cardiac/interventional CT suite, and a 20 bed prep and recovery area in the main hospital at the Heart and Vascular center. At the ART, the Division of Interventional Radiology facility includes two brand new angio suites and one 16 slice CT scanner. At the ART we share a 34 bed prep and recovery area with the cardiology division. There is also an animal lab used for teaching and research.

The division of Interventional Radiology has a significant infrastructure to support our operations, with one administrative assistant, one research coordinator, and two patient care coordinators, in addition to a group of nine procedural RNs, ten interventional RTs, two clinical managers and a billing and supplies coordinator.
