Student Laptop Standards

Updated 6/13/2012

The MUSC Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) has established the following minimum standards for student laptops.  We recognize that many students arrive on campus with very serviceable laptops and we are making provisions for network support.  Students whose laptops meet or exceed the requirements will e supported on the MUSC network. The OCIO does not require any special brand and will support both Windows and Macintosh computers on the university’s network.  If students wish to purchase a laptop prior to coming to MUSC, or use their existing laptop computer, it should at least meet the following requirements.

Mac PC
2.5Ghz Dual Core CPU 2.5Ghz Dual Core CPU
4 GB RAM 4 GB RAM
250GB HDD 250GB HDD
802.11n (laptop) 802.11n (laptop)
OS X 10.7 Windows 7 SP1

Some colleges have different requirements and you should check their web pages for specifics.

The College of Nursing’s requirements can be found at:

The College of Health Professions requirements can be found at:

Students may bring their laptops, Smartphones, and similar mobile devices to the Student Technology Support Services desk on the 4th floor of the Library for assistance in configuring them to work with MUSC network and academic services.  MUSC technology experts from the library, the colleges, and MUSC IT provide wireless configuration, e-mail set-up, anti-virus support, and hardware troubleshooting.  The service desk is manned on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon until 4 p.m. Additional information can be found at http://stss.library.musc.edu  OR send e-mail inquiries to stusuppt@musc.edu

If I can be of assistance, please feel free to contact me.
