Configuring a MUSC Remote Dial-up (Modem) Connections Using Windows XP

1. Locate and right click on My Network Places and select Properties.

2. Select Create a new Connection.

3. Select Next

4. Select Connect to the Internet and Select Next.

5 Select Setup my connection manually, select Next..

6. Select Connect using a dial-up modem,

Select Next.

7.Type in a name for your connection. IE: MUSC

8. Enter the phone number for the Internet Service Provicer (ISP), select Next

MUSC number is
577-7276. If you are using the modem dial up properties, which is recommended, you do not have to enter the area code or any other access numbers.

9. At the Connection Availability screen, you can choose Anyone's Use to allow all users of the PC to access this Dial-up connection or My Use Only for the user currently logged in to the PC.

Select Next


10. The Internet Account Information screen gives you the ability to retain your user name and password. This of course is NOT recommended if your PC is not secured. Placing a check in the Default Internet Connection will dial this connection for you when attempting to connect to the internet. The Internet Connection Firewall is a new feature to the Windows NT versions introduced in XP. When selected, it provides limited firewall protection against unknown users attempting to connect to your PC while you are connected to the internet. Choose your options and Select Next.

11. When you have reached the Completing the New Network Connection Wizard screen, the default option places a shortcut to the dial-up connection on your desktop. If you do not want a shortcut, uncheck the option and Select Finish.

12. Once the new connection has been created, you will need to enter the IP Configuration of the MUSC servers. To perform this, Right Click on the new connection that created and select Properties.

13. From within the Properties, General Tab, place a check in the Show Icon in Notification Area when Connected, which will allow you to monitor the status of your connection from the toolbar while connected. Enter the area code 843 if you are dialing from outside of the 843 area.

14. Select Use Dialing Rules if you need to specify any additional options such as dialing a 9 for external phone line access or #70 to disable call waiting.

15. Select the Networking Tab and highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) making sure that this box is checked and Select Properties. Make sure that the options: Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically are selected. Select the Advance button.

16.Select the DNS Tab, enter musc.edu (note lower case), which is the DNS suffix for this connection. Select OK to close all windows.
