Accessing MUSC's PPP Service with
Microsoft Windows 95/98

Overview

Windows has built-in support for accessing a PPP account. Before you continue, you should make sure that your modem is installed correctly. Then you can install and configure the necessary Dial-up Networking software. Next, you will run a setup wizard to create a new icon, which you will use to connect to MUSC's PPP Service. And finally, you will need to have a program to access IP protocol services (e.g. Internet Explorer, Netscape, NetTerm, SSH, or ftp program, etc. ). If the necessary software is not already installed, you will need your Windows disks or CD-ROM.

Checking your Modem

To make sure your modem is installed properly, open up the control panel from inside My Computer, and Double-click on Modems. Assuming you have installed your modem, you should see a list of items something like that pictured here. If not, you will have to do some other hardware related configuration with your modem; follow the instructions that came with your modem. If you do see your modem in the list, click on the Diagnostics tab. Find your modem in the list, and click on your modem to selct it. Then click More Info. If all is well, you should get a window with a bunch of cryptic information, similar to that shown in this depiction.

The Dial-Up Networking Adapter

Double click on the "My Computer" icon on the desktop. If the Dial-up Adapter is already installed, then "Dial-Up Networking" will appear as a Folder, and you can go on to the next step.

If the Dial-up Adapter is not installed, open the Settings > Control Panel from the Start Menu. Double-click on Add/Remove Programs. Click on the Windows Setup tab. Double-click on Communications, and check the box for "Dial-up Networking", click OK. Click on the next OK to install it. You will probably need to have your original Windows CD-ROM or disks available. When the installation is finished, you must restart your computer to complete the installation.

TCP/IP Networking Protocol

Open Settings > Control Panel from the Start Menu. Double click on Network. If TCP/IP is on the list, then go to the next step.

If TCP/IP is not on the list, click on Add... Then double click on Protocols, select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers, and select TCP/IP from the list of Network Protocols. Then click OK. You will probably need to have your original Windows CD-ROM or disks available. When the installation is finished, you may have to restart your computer to complete the installation Click on the Identification tab and type your MNA user name that was assigned to you in the Computer name field. Usually, this is the same as your email address, without the @musc.edu info. In this example, my MNA is brownpw.

Next, type home in the Workgroup field, to identify this as your home computer.

Set up information to Access MUSC's PPP Service.

Double-click on "My Computer", then open the Dial-Up Networking Folder and double click on the Make New Connection icon.

In the Make New Connection setup, enter a name for the service ("MUSC" will be used in this example). The modem selection should come up with your default modem setup.

Click on Next> to continue.

Type 577-7276 in the phone number field.

Click on Next to continue.

You should then see a window telling you that you have successfully created a new Dial-Up Networking connection. Click on Finish to complete the setup.

When the setup is complete, your Dial-Up Networking window should have a new icon, with the name you entered in the Setup Wizard.

Configure your TCP/IP Settings

From the Dial-Up Networking window, right-click on your dial-up connection icon (MUSC, in our example), and select Properties.

This will bring up a window with a summary of the settings you entered above. Click on the Server Type button, and verify the following settings: Type of Dial-up Server: PPP: Windows 95/98/NT/2000..., Advanced Options: Log on to network and Enable software compression checked, Require encrypted password not checked. Allowed network protocols: TCP/IP checked, NetBEUI and IPX/SPX not checked.

Click on TCP/IP Setttings.  Enter the following information: Server Assigned IP address should be selected, as well as Server assigned name server addresses. Use IP header compression and Use default gateway should both be checked.

Click on OK on both the windows to close them.

If you Plan to Connect to the Homeroom Server

From the Control Panel, open up Network, and click on TCP/IP. Then click on the Properties button. When the TCP/IP Properties Window appears, clisk on the WINS Configuration tab. Click the circle at the bottom of the window called Use DHCP for WINS Resolution. Click ok, and reboot your machine. TCP/IP Properties

Enter your PPP Account information.

Go to the Dial-Up Networking Folder and double click on your setup file (MUSC, in our example). Enter your userid and password in the fields. If you check the Save Password box, you won't have to enter it again. Otherwise, you will be prompted for your password each time you use your PPP account.

Click on Dial Properties to continue.

If you have a portable or laptop, you can setup different locations (Home, Work, etc.) If you have call waiting, you'll definitely want to check that box - call waiting will disrupt your network connection. Bell South uses *70 to disable call waiting (only for the next phone call) - you can pick it from the pull-down menu.

Click on OK to continue. This will return you to the Connect To window. Test your setup now, by clicking on the Connect button. You'll see a status window that will go through several messages (Initializing, Dialing, Connecting, Verifying, etc.) Finally you'll get a message saying you're connected. Now you can run any Internet Protocol based program, and you'll have full network access (at modem speeds, of course.)
