Setting up PPP on Windows 2000

Step-by-step instructions with screen shots for accessing MUSC's dial-up PPP Server
Note: This document is valid only for Windows 2000. To install information on Windows 98, click here


There are three parts to setting up a PPP connection on Windows 2000:

1. Configuring Phone and Modem Options
2. Configuring Network and Dial-up Connections
3. Fine Tuning your TCP/IP Properties

All of these settings are accessed through your computer's Control Panel Settings. Leave it open during the whole process.


 
Part I - Phone And Modem Options

1. Double click on your computer's icon.

(NOTE: when you install Windows 2000,
your computer is given the default name
My Computer.)

2. Double click on Control Panel and you will see the screen at right.

 


 

Your screen view may vary, but one location will be highlighted.

Click the EDIT button.



 

1. Give the Location a name (here it's "home") and supply the area code if necessary.

(NOTE: other settings will depend on the type of service you have on your phone line. Example, 9 to dial out or *70 to disconnect call waiting.)

2. Don't click OK until you've checked the Area Code Rules button and, if necessary, Calling Card button.

3. When all of the information for this Location is correct, click OK.



 

1. If your area code is already displayed, it means that you've had a previous dial-up connection. If nothing is displayed or if another area code is displayed, click NEW and add the information as shown in the graphic. The area code screen is not shown in this document, but is easy to follow.

2.Supply the informationand click OK



 

If necessary click the Calling Card button and supply the information,

Click OK.



 

You are now back at the Phone and Modem Options main Menu.

1. Click the Modems button and you will see your modem and connection port displayed.

2.Click the Properties button.

(NOTE: if you see NON FUNCTIONAL under Attached To, your modem is not installed correctly and you won't be able to go past this screen.)



 

1. Set the modem properties as shown.

( NOTE: don't check the Wait for Dial Tone Before Dialing because you may have a service on your phone line that gives a different signal than a normal dial tone.)

2. Don't click OK, but click the Diagnostics button.



 

1. It is here that you will check your modem connection. You don't need to supply any information here, but click the Query Modem button to check your connection. If you have a good connection, a message will flash on the screen.

2. After you get the message, click OK and go back to the Control Panels to move on to Part II -Network and Dial-up Connections.



  Part II - Network and Dial-up Connections

 

1. Double click on your computer's icon.

(NOTE: when you install Windows 2000, your computer is given the default name of My Computer.)

2. Double click on Control Panel.

3. Double click Network and Diual-up Connections.



 

Double click Make New Connection



 

This brings you to the Network Connection Wizard. As you furnish the information on each screen, click NEXT to move on to the next step.

Click Next.



 

1. Click the Dial-up to the Internet radio button.

2. Click Next.



 

1. Click the last radio button "...to set up my Internet connection manually..."

2. Click Next



 

1. Click "I connect through a phone line and a modem"

2. Click Next



 

Supply the information as shown.

The area code is 843 and the phone number to the PPP server is 577-7276.

Click Use Area Code and Dialing Rules.



 

1. Supply your user name and password, which are the same as those on your MUSC Network Account (MNA).

2. Click Next



 

1. Name the connection MUSC

2. Click Next



 

You are at the screen that reads "Set Up Your Internet Mail Account"

1. Click NO

2. Click Next



 

Check the box that reads "...connect to the Internet immediately..."

Click Finish

Now you are going to move on to Part III, Fine Tuning your TCP/IP Properties.




  Part III Fine Tuning your TCP/IP Properties

 

1. Double click on your computer's icon.

(NOTE: when you install Windows 2000,
your computer is given the default name
My Computer.)

2. Double click Control Panels

3. Double click MUSC



 

This brings up a dialog box as shown at right.

1. Supply your user name and password (they are the same as your MNA)

(NOTE: you should leave Save Password unchecked if you have a portable or laptop computer or if your computer is used by other members of your household. If your computer is a desktop model and no one but you uses it, you can check Save Password.)

2. Click Properties


 

1. In the General menu, supply the information as shown and be sure to check the "Show Icon in Taskbar When Connected" button.

2. Don't Clilck OK, but click OPTIONS



 

1. Make sure that the values shown in the graphic to the right match your settings.

 

2. Don't clilck OK, but click Security



 

1. Click Typical (recommended settings)

2. Select "Allow unsecured password"

3. Don't cliick OK, but click Networking.



 

For dial-up connections off campus, only the following need to be checked:

1. Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

and

2. Client for Microsoft Networks

3. Click OK



 

1. Click to highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

2. Click Properties


 

You will see the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties main screen.

You don't have to change anything on this screen, but

Click Advanced


 

You are at the Advanced TCP/IP Settings menu.

You don't have to do anything on this screen

Click DNS button near the top.


 

You are now on the DNS settings screen. There are two things you have to do here.

1. Make sure the
"Register this connection's address in DNS"
is UNCHECKED (blank).

2. Click the "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)"

3. Click the ADD button.


 

In the TCP/IP Domain Suffix popup box

1. Type in musc.edu (lower case)

3. Click ADD


 

You will return to the DNS menu page and you should see musc.edu in the suffixes box.

1. Click OK

You will then go back to the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties main menu (NOT SHOWN).

2. Click OK again.

 


 

You are now back at the Local Area Connection Properties menu.

Click OK


 

Back at the Connect MUSC screen,

Click Dial



 

On the menu line in your taskbar, you should see MUSC Speed: NN.N kbps. The speed shown will be that of your modem and will vary with modem type.
