Connecting to MUSC using Apple Remote Access
(ARA - comes with any Mac OS 8.5 and above)

LANRover accounts do not automatically transfer to the new PPP server. If you do not have a PPP account you must register for one online: http://www.musc.edu/infoservices/ppp/setup.html. Students and Residents are automatically registered for a PPP account.

Configuring your Connection

You must specify certain settings so you may successfully dial in to MUSC.
  1. Click on the apple icon in the upper left-hand corner of your screen.
  2. The Apple menu will drop down, highlight Control Panels.
  3. From the menu that appears to the right of Control Panels, choose AppleTalk


  4. When the AppleTalk control panel opens, click on the bar to the right of Connect via:
  5. You should have 3 options, Printer Port, Modem Port and Remote Only.
  6. Choose Modem Port and set this to the type of modem and the port it is connected to. If your mosdem is not listed, the Remote Access Read Me folder has information on installation.
  7. Then choose Remote Only and close the AppleTalk control panel. If you are asked to save the changes, answer yes

  8. Click on the Apple Menu again and choose Control Panels again.
  9. From the Control Panels menu choose TCP/IP. It will be near the bottom of the menu. 


  10. Click on the bar to the right of Connect via: and choose PPP.
  11. Click on the bar to the right of Configure: and choose Using PPP Server.
  12. In the box next to Name server addr.: type in 128.23.1.4
  13. In the box below Search domains: type in musc.edu in lowercase letters.
  14. Now close the TCP/IP control panel and answer yes when prompted to save changes.



  15. Click on the Apple Menu and from Control Panels, choose Remote Access.
  16. When the Remote Access control panel opens, look under Setup.
  17. Make sure you have Registered User chosen.
  18. In the box next to Name: enter your your MUSC Network Account ID .
  19. This is usually your e-mail address without the @musc.edu For example, if your name is John Doe and your E-mail address is
  20. doej@musc.edu, your MUSC Network Account ID is doej  There are some exceptions.
  21. In the box next to Password: enter the password for your MUSC Network Account.
  22. Be sure to remember your password is case sensitive.
  23. For example, MyPassword and mypassword are not the same thing.
  24. In the box next to Number: enter 577-7276 If you have call waiting, be sure to enter *70, before the phone number.
  25. For info on configuring ARA/PPP optional settings such a redialing, autoconnecting, and modem compression (recommended), view options.
  26. Close the Remote Access control panel and answer yes when prompted to save changes. 


  27. If your modem is hooked up and the software that came with it installed, you are ready to dial in.
  28. Open the Remote Access control panel again and click on Connect.
  29. When you are not connected, the Status box of your Remote Access control panel will say Idle.
  30. When you click on Connect, a series of messages will flash up in the Status box while your modem is connecting.
  31. If you connect successfully you will up see a line that says Connected at: To the right of that you will see the speed at which you are connected.
  32. This speed can range from 1200bps to 53000bps depending on your modem and your neighborhood's phone lines. 


  33. If you wish, you may close the Remote Access control panel to get it out of your way.
  34. Simply closing the control panel will not disconnect you from MUSC.
  35. In order to disconnect, you must click on the Disconnect button in the Remote Access control panel.
