Automatic Updates with windowsupdate.musc.edu

Using Internet Explorer (this service will not work with other browsers), go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and follow the instructions for installing either the AutoReboot or Prompted Reboot registry files.

To receive notification about the windowsupdate.musc.edu service, click here to send a message to majordomo; if the system balks because there is not a subject line, simply click "OK".

Microsoft Applications (Office, Visio, Project)

1) Make sure you have your installation CDs before starting; some updates require it.

2) Make sure you're logged into your workstation with an account that has administrative rights.

3) Close all of your Microsoft applications

4) Using Internet Explorer, go to http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate

5) Near the center of the screen, there's a blue box that says "Office Updates". Click on the link to "Check for Updates"

6) Allow Microsoft to install the scanning software

7) If the scanner returns with a list of critical updates, select "Start Installation".

8) Select "Next" when presented with the end-user agreement.

9) Select "Next" at the screen "Please have your Office product CD ready". If you didn't get them in Step 1, you will need to now.

10) The download will start and the web site will give you an idea of how long it will take to download the updates.

11) When the download is complete, the update wizard will automatically install the patches. If prompted, insert the appropriate CD and tell the application where to find it (e.g., D: drive; E: drive)

12) Restart the workstation when the update wizard has finished.

13 Repeat Steps 4-12 until the scanner reports that your software is fully patched. You may have to do this multiple times if you've never patched your Microsoft applications.
