What follows is the main screens involved in setting up the MacOS X (v. 10.3.x and 10.4.x) to use the built-in Mail program to access secure MUSC IMAP mail and use secure SMTP sendmail. By doing this, you may use a single e-mail program to access both your .Mac account (if you have one) and your MUSC IMAP e-mail.
(GroupWise users take note: if you are converting from a GroupWise account to a Mac Mail (IMAP) account, you must contact the IS Help Desk at 792-9700 and tell a representative you want to make the switch. Doing this will insure that your old mail is forwarded to your new account. You can't just setup an account like below without having your account switched from GroupWise to IMAP.)
Step One -- Adding another account
With Mail running, go under the Mail menu and click Preferences
Click the Accounts tab
Click the Plus (+) sign at the bottom of the screen to add an account
Here's an example of how it should look:

Note that the incoming mail server is imaps.musc.edu
Your MNA User Name and Password should be entered here
Your Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): will show something else because you haven't set that up yet.
Setp Two -- Setup the SMTP
From the Account Information screen above, click and hold on Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
Scroll down to Add Server...
Below is an example of how you should configure this information:

Note the smtps.musc.edu, the server port number, and the checked SSL box. Change Authentication to Password as shown above. Click OK.
Now you are back to the Account Information screen and the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): shows the server you just configured above.
Step 3 -- Change Advanced settings
Click the Advanced tab (last on right under Accounts)
Use the settings shown below:

The important part here is that the IMAP Path Prefix contains INBOX, the Port is set to 993, Use SSL is checked, and Authentication: is password.
As for Keep copies of messages for offline viewing:
There are several options. For more info on these choices, click the Question Mark (?) at the bottom of the screen.
Step 4 -- Setting LDAP to lookup names at MUSC
From the Mail -> Preferences menu, select Composing
Make sure the boxes are checked as shown above, then Click the Configue LDAP button
Click the Plus sign to add an LDAP Server
Set up the Server Info as shown above, be sure to have Scope: read Subtree
Click Save.
