MUSC Macintosh OS X How-To

This page acts as a clearinghouse for Macintosh OS X information at the Medical University of South Carolina. This page, and those that follow, are the result of a collaborative effort among OCIO-IS, ITC, MACOSX group and other interested parties.

The page attempts to specify settings and configurations for connectivity at MUSC. While the links here are produced by different people, the common goal is to facilitate on- and off-campus connectivity, compare notes on software, exchange tips and tricks, and generally share information about Apple's Macintosh running OS X

To suggest a topic for inclusion here or to submit a step-by-step or how-to article, please contact George Spain (spain2@musc.edu). You may also join the Mac OS X majordomo list by subscribing to macosx@musc.edu. To join this list, you must have a MUSC MNA login and password.

Screensaver as active desktop

This strange bit of magic turns your selected screensaver into an active desktop. You can perform normal desktop operations while your screensaver is running in the background. Note: it only works while Terminal is running and some screensavers can slow down your operations.

From the Terminal, type:

/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.app/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &
