Standards Summary
What do the NetID Standards Address?
Namespace
For new users: The NetID = user's initial + digits.
Example: Robert Jackson Smith could receive "rjs5" as his NetID.
Email Alias
New users receive an email alias based on their name.
- Example: Robert Jackson Smith gets "smithrj" as his email alias.
Login to the network as "rjs5;" published in the Online Directory would be "smithrj."
Name Change
If a user's name changes, the email alias can be changed upon request; the NetID
remains the same.
Existing Users
The MNA/AD user name is loaded as the email alias and NetID. If the
user's name changes, the email alias may be changed, and the NetID can then
be changed to the new format (e.g. xyz9).
Password Complexity
MUST:- be 6-10 characters long
- contain at least 3 of the following:
- number
- upper case character
- lower case character
- special character
- contain the username
- contain the first, preferred or last name
- be in the dictionary
Password Distribution for New Users
New users must pick up their NetID username and temporary password at a designated security station:- New Hire Orientation
- Admission process
- Medical Center Security Desk
- Library Systems Office
The user must then activate their NetID within 60 days. The activation process entails:
- Agreeing to the Computer Use Policy and Security and Confidentiality Agreement,
- Establishing 3 shared secrets,
- Changing the password.
