File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
Before you begin
Very Important -- Do not delete any files on your Homeroom drive whose name begins with a period (.) These are called "dot" files and are crucial to the smooth operation of your e-mail and other programs (files like .pinerc and .cshrc, etc.).What is FTP?
FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is a method of electronically transferring computer files. It may be used to transfer files back and forth between your Homeroom Directory and your computer.
How do I ftp?
- From a browser - https://appserve.musc.edu/ftphomeroom/ or
- Use the SSH ftp client to connect to Homeroom (more flexibility with multiple files/directory transfers) SSH is available for Linux, Mac or Windows machines.
- Save the file to a folder or your desktop
- Double click on the exe or zip file you just saved (it will take you through a setup process and write the files to a directory).
- You'll see two files/applications after the install: SSH Secure Shell Client and SSH Secure File Transfer Client
- Open the SSH File Transfer Client to use the ftp feature
- View Instructions for using SSH and connecting to Homeroom
- Always remember to log out when you've finished transferring files - never leave the connection open when not in use.
