File Transfer Protocol (FTP)

Before you begin

Very Important -- Do not delete any files on your Homeroom drive whose name begins with a period (.) These are called "dot" files and are crucial to the smooth operation of your e-mail and other programs (files like .pinerc and .cshrc, etc.).

What is FTP?

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is a method of electronically transferring computer files.  It may be used to transfer files back and forth between your Homeroom Directory and your computer.

How do I ftp?

  1. From a browser - https://appserve.musc.edu/ftphomeroom/ or
  2. Use the SSH ftp client to connect to Homeroom (more flexibility with multiple files/directory transfers)
  3. SSH is available for Linux, Mac or Windows machines.

    Installing/Using SSH

    1. Save the file to a folder or your desktop
    2. Double click on the exe or zip file you just saved (it will take you through a setup process and write the files to a directory).
    3. You'll see two files/applications after the install: SSH Secure Shell Client and SSH Secure File Transfer Client
    4. Open the SSH File Transfer Client to use the ftp feature
    5. View Instructions for using SSH and connecting to Homeroom
    6. Always remember to log out when you've finished transferring files - never leave the connection open when not in use.
