Using SecureMail at MUSC
The SecureMail IronPort system at MUSC does not require additional software for either the sender or receiver, nor does it demand passphrase or key to access secure files. To read secure messages, the recipient creates an account on MUSC’s IronPort server – and then uses that account to see any MUSC secure message. This is only for messages sent outside of MUSC’s Exchange system!
The IronPort help files can be found at https://securemail.musc.edu/websafe/help?topic=FAQ. A PDF overview, with illustration, is also available.
To send a secure message, either:
- Enter (without quotes) "[SEND SECURE]" into the subject of the message, or
- Go to https://securemail.musc.edu and use your NetID to log in.
To read a secure message, the recipient will:
- probably have to adjust the browser (e.g., in Internet Explorer, change security settings to “medium” or, in Firefox, accept cookies from third parties)
- open the "securedoc.html" attachment,
- then establish the account or log in, if account exists.
Things to remember:
- There is a 250Mb limit on the SecureMail mailbox
- Messages are not automatically retired; you will have to delete your sent items yourself
- You can elect to receive a notice when the recipient accesses the message
- The recipient cannot forward the message itself
Detailed directions, with illustrations, can be found in this PDF file.
