Configuring Your Blackberry without MUSC BES Service
Many Blackberry vendors offer at least one of two methods for accessing your Exchange mail without a Blackberry Exchange Server (BES) account: using IMAP or Outlook Web Access (OWA). Because the method for doing so is unique to each vendor, you must either review your documentation or contact your service provider. The information they will require is standard, however, and appears below.
Drawbacks to this method
- You will not be able to wirelessly synchronize your address book, calendar, memos and tasks.
- You will have to contact your provider - not OCIO-IS - if your device is lost and must be 'wiped'.
- While you may be able to configure your settings to "send as" your MUSC account, your sent mail might be stored on the provider's e-mail system, not on MUSC's Exchange server. Check with your service provider.
- Synchronization varies by provider: You might have only one-way synchronization, where messages read via OWA, Outlook or Entourage do not have their status synchronized on the Blackberry. Again, check with your service provider.
- You might not be able to read messages stored in folders other than the main Inbox.
- You will have to contact your provider if your configuration no longer works.
Settings
- IMAP: The server is "eximap.musc.edu" and the port is 993. We use SSL.
- OWA: The server is http://exchange.musc.edu. Our domain is "clinlan" and your userID would be "clinlan\NetID" (e.g., clinlan\muscuser).
