International Affairs Committee

In 1983, the Medical University of South Carolina  chartered the University International Affairs Committee, which focused on  existing and potential international cooperative activities.  Over the years  the Committee supported several formal and informal international agreements.   A review of the changing and growing nature of university international activities was undertaken in 1996 at the request of the Provost.  A working party and special faculty forum recommended establishment of a new and expanded university standing committee.  This recommendation was accepted by Dr. Raymond Greenberg, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost.  He appointed Dr. Peter Cotton, Assistant Dean for International Activities, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Digestive Disease Center, to the Chairmanship of the International Affairs Committee.

Formal Charge to the Committee:

The purpose of this committee is to promote and facilitate international activities and exchanges that support the University's missions of education, research, and patient care.

  1. Develop a vision/mission statement for international activities that can be incorporated in the University's planning processes, organizational structure, and operations.
  2. Develop and maintain a database of University faculty, staff and student interests, experiences, contacts, and resources with respect to international activities that relate to the University's missions of education, research, and patient care.
  3. Establish criteria for the review of proposals for international initiatives and agreements, regardless of funding sources (departmental, college, university, external). These criteria shall include but not be limited to relevance to the University's missions, potential benefits to the University and the State (good will, economic development, entrepreneurship), and impact on human, material, and fiscal resources.
  4. Review proposed international initiatives/agreements that include an international component, and make recommendations to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost regarding their relevance for the University's missions, potential benefits, and impact on resources.
  5. Work with the Office of Research Development to develop and maintain a database of grant and contract funding sources, assure that interested parties receive notices of funding sources and requests for proposals, and document/track grants and contracts received that support international initiatives.
