Expand Department of Health Administration and Policy's
Rural Health Administrative Internship Program
to Serve the Entire State of South Carolina

Kenneth R. Whittemore, PhD
College of Health Professions

Specific Aims:

  • Develop recruitment materials
  • Recruit a network of preceptors
  • Establish externship and fellowship sites
  • Assist in recruitment efforts of Palmetto Initiative
Medically underserved, socioeconomically disadvantaged rural communities in South Carolina need health care administrators as well as health care providers. MUSC's Department of Health Administration and Policy has an internship program that places students in both public and nonprofit, private organizations and provides these students an experience in rural health administration. As part of this project, Dr. Whittemore will collaborate with the Palmetto Initiative for Excellence: Diversity in Health Care Leadership to locate and place undergraduate and graduate minority students in internships and administrative residency experiences with health care facilities throughout the State. He also will build a network of health care preceptors who will allow these students to work as interns in their facilities while learning about health care delivery in rural and medically underserved areas. This project will match health administration students and preceptors. Preceptors and students will evaluate their experiences using questionnaires prepared for this project.
