On Thursday, March 30, there will be a poster session showing the 28 individual projects of the Healthy South Carolina Initiative. Please plan to walk through the 1st and 2nd floor lobbies of the Administration/Library Building and view the posters, pick up a handout, and talk with the principal investigators or their community partners. The PIs will be at their posters from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on Thursday. Posters will be set up beginning Thursday morning and taken down on Friday after the inaugural festivities on campus.

This year the faculty development program will concentrate on sustaining the projects beyond their current funding periods. Continuing the partnerships with the community is very important. In January, Dr. Diane Hatchell, a consultant to MUSC, will present a special session on grant writing for HSCI principal investigators and their MUSC senior staff ONLY. Other speakers will include Dr. Ray Greenberg with an introduction of the session, Dr. Marilyn Laken on strategies to sustain the HSCI projects, and Peggy Schachte and Jim Fisher on funding from the federal government and private foundations.

Sarena D. Seifer, M.D., Executive Director, Community-Campus Partnerships for Health, will be the speaker at the quarterly seminar for Healthy South Carolina Initiative investigators and other interested parties. Dr. Seifer will present information on community-campus partnerships, including service learning, and a panel of deans and community partners will respond with their perspectives. The meeting will be held from noon until 2:00 p.m.. in Room 502, Basic Sciences Building at MUSC.

Video conference link-up with the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Public Health. The video conference on Minority Health will take place each day from 1:30-4:30 p.m., focusing on different topics on issues and solutions related to collecting and analyzing data for racial and ethnic populations. Video conference viewing location will be Baruch Auditorium.

A one-day conference for HSCI Advisory Board, PIs and Staff. The program consisted of an overview of the Initiatives; presentations by two MUSC programs, Educational Technology Laboratory (re. HSCI web-site) and MUSC Gives Back; summaries of eight initiatives; and a guest lecture by Craig Hullett of Michigan State University on "Evaluating Community-based Programs."

Grand Rounds Presentation hosted by HSCI and Center for Health Care Research. Pam Shaheen, DrPH, Director of Operations of the Comprehensive Community Health Models of Michigan, and Catherine Kinney, an independent health care consultant. The presentation was titled, "W.K. Kellogg Foundation Approach to Community Based Health Care Reform."
