| Ten South Carolina counties are in the Savannah River Region, an area in which citizens have been worried about the health effects of the nuclear production facility. MUSC faculty have worked with these communities over the past five years, studying the numbers of area patients diagnosed with cancer and comparing these numbers with similar patients throughout the nation. This project will use the recent report of these findings to inform South Carolina residents in this region about the cancer incidence. The project will develop an educational program around the report that will build community understanding of specific population-based health terms, such as "exposure," "exposure-cell interaction," "disease," "risk factors," "early detection," and "progression." Another part of the project will be to inform newspaper, television, and other reporters about environmental health and cancer education. Health career sessions will be conducted for community youth. Finally, an easy-to-use Internet site about cancer in the Savannah River Region will be designed and made available to the public The project will use questionnaires to evaluate knowledge acquired, attitudes affected, use of the Internet, and number of patients receiving health care in South Carolina instead of Georgia |
