There are many different sports that are called “fencing.”  These include theatrical fencing, period fencing, and competitive fencing.  Theatrical fencing was developed to teach actors to simulate combat without putting themselves or their fellow actors at risk.  It looks good but no one ever gets hit.  Period fencing, also called SCA fencing for the Society of Creative Anachronism.  It teaches sword play in the costume of some past era.  People often take on the persona of some past individual.  Finally, competitive fencing is the type of sport recognized by the Olympics.

Competitive fencing evolved from sword fighting that predominated military battles for most of human history.  Today, fencing is truly a sport that encompasses three distinct weapons, the foil, the epee, and the saber.  The foil is the training weapon for the court short sword of European royalty.  The epee is a dueling weapon, and the saber is the training weapon for the military saber.  In the sport of fencing, there are separate rules for each of the three weapons.

You will find fencing to be a fast paced sport that requires your full concentration.  It is highly competitive yet filled tradition from the earliest days of swordplay.  Fencing demands good sportsmanship.  You will develop lifelong friends through this sport.  You will master the lessons of self-control, chivalry, and personal confidence which you can carry to other aspects of your life.

Kem Fronabarger has been fencing for over twenty five years and has been coaching since 1992.
