Human Resources Management Policy
NOTE: THIS POLICY, LIKE ALL OTHER
MUSC HUMAN RESOURCES POLICIES, IS NOT A CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT AND SHOULD
NOT BE RELIED UPON AS SUCH. THIS POLICY MAY BE CHANGED AT ANY TIME BY THE
MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.
- I. POLICY
- To provide a safe environment for employees,
students, patients and visitors, the Medical University of South Carolina
prohibits the carrying of weapons on property owned, operated or controlled
by the University or at MUSC sponsored events.
- Furthermore, in accordance with the Law
Abiding Citizens Self-Defense Act, the Medical University prohibits
the carrying of a concealed or visible firearm, even those for which the
owner has obtained a permit, on its premises or at University sponsored
- Persons who violate this policy will be
terminated and may be prosecuted.
- Only Medical University Public Safety Officers
or other authorized law enforcement officers in the course of their duties
are exempt from this Policy.
- II. INFORMATION
- The carrying of weapons, by anyone other
than MUSC Public Safety Officers or other authorized law enforcement officers,
is prohibited on property owned, operated or controlled by the Medical
University of South Carolina and at University sponsored events.
- For the purpose of this Policy, a weapon
is defined as any instrument or device that is specifically designed,
made or adapted for the purpose of inflicting bodily injury or death.
This includes, but is not limited to; clubs, firearms, handguns, illegal
knives, explosives, crossbows, bows and arrows, throwing stars and knuckles.
- To insure the safety of employees, students,
patients and visitors, employees are encouraged to call the Department
of Public Safety if they suspect that someone is carrying a weapon. Employees
should not attempt to disarm another individual.
- Violation of this Policy will result in
termination from employment and possible prosecution by the University.
