Employment of Minors

NOTE: THIS POLICY, LIKE ALL OTHER MUSC HUMAN RESOURCES POLICIES, IS NOT A CONTRACT OF EMPLOYMENT AND SHOULD NOT BE RELIED UPON AS SUCH. THIS POLICY MAY BE CHANGED AT ANY TIME BY THE MEDICAL UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

PURPOSE

To define the policies and procedures in regard to the employment of minors and ensure compliance with Federal and State law.

POLICY STATEMENT

It is Medical University's policy to make every effort to secure employees who are eighteen (18) years of age or older. However, when this cannot be accomplished minors may be employed under the following conditions:

    1. Minors under sixteen (16) years of age will not be employed.
    2. Minors age sixteen (16) or seventeen (17) may be employed during any hours. However, they may not be employed in any occupation determined to be hazardous, i.e.,:
      1. In or around explosives or explosive material;
      2. As motor vehicle operator or helper;
      3. As elevator operator;
      4. In the operation of power driven bakery machines;
      5. In any operation using power driven hoisting apparatus.

At age eighteen (18), individuals shall not be considered to be minors and may be employed in any occupation during any hours.
