• Student positions do not require recruitment; however, if a candidate has not been identified and/or the position will last more than six (6) months, it is recommended that you post and competitively recruit for the position.

Note: A Hiring Freeze Exemption form is not required by HRM for Student positions.

• Employment Consultant Contacts Student to Coordinate all Pre-employment Requirements:
1. Employee Health Services (health screening)
Students are advised to bring immunization records on day of appointment and/or to have their health records faxed from Student Health Services to MUSC Employee Health Services (792-1200) prior to appointment
2. On-line OSHA/HIPAA briefings (www.musc.edu/hrm/welcome/htm)
3. Background Check
Student Employee May Start Work (upon successful completion of all pre-employment requirements)

• An original PEAR form (with appropriate approval signatures) should be forwarded to:
Sylvia Strickland, Records Analyst, Human Resources Management
Note: It is recommended the PEAR form be sent to Human Resources as soon as possible, as the PEAR form (and new employee sign-up) is the “catalyst” for an employee to be processed for payroll.

• Pending successful completion of pre-employment requirements, employee will complete the sign-up paperwork at the Department of Human Resources Management, Room 105, Harborview Office Tower. Student should bring Driver’s License, Social Security Card, or other required documentation for I-9 purposes (i.e., VISA, Passport, etc.).

Employment of Minors

MUSC has a responsibility to promote a safe and healthy environment for employees, students and guests of the University. Minors, (individuals under the age of 18 years) often seek opportunities to study, work and observe in laboratories at MUSC. Make sure to review the guidelines are intended to provide direction for program managers, laboratory managers and investigators regarding minors working or observing in MUSC laboratories.
