Orientation & Contacts
MUSC offers various opportunities to assist you in your benefits
choices:
- We hold regular Benefits
Orientation meetings for new staff, every Monday morning.
- Our web site provides extensive on-line benefits information.
Check out the links on the left bar to learn about our plans.
- Our benefits office is located on
the first floor of the Harborview Office Tower and our representatives
are available for questions over the phone or by appointment
every day from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm. In order to make the most out
of it, we strongly encourage you to review the information that
is available on our web site prior to your meeting.
- Benefits Providers are the best and most reliable source of
information if you have any specific question about their plans.
The first point of contact for questions/concerns regarding coverage,
claims, policy, identification cards, physician selection or changes
is the Employee Insurance Program.
Additional information can be obtained directly from your provider
customer service department or representative.
- A glossary is available to help you
clarify some important terms used in the benefits plans.
Eligibility
Benefits Eligibility: Employees who occupy a classified/unclassified FTE,
benefits-eligible research grant, faculty, postdoctoral scholar or resident position
and are employed at a .50 FTE (20 hours per week) or more for a
period of employment that is at least a continuous period of one
(1) year or more.
Retirement Eligibility: Employees who occupy a state FTE position
earning more than $100 per month are required to participate and contribute
to either SCRS or State ORP. Non-covered positions such as research grant
or temporary employee may elect not to participate. Student employees
are not allowed to participate in SCRS.
Enrolling & Changing your Benefits
All enrollment forms are due within 31 days of your hire date.
If you miss the 31 day enrollment deadline, you may apply for certain
benefits which require the demonstration of good health (EOI) to
enroll. The term "EOI" stands for Evidence of
Insurability. Sometimes called a statement of good health,
this is a form you submit with your enrollment form to apply for
insurance coverage. It usually requires a physical or a doctor certification
of your good health. The EOI is reviewed by the insurance company
and its underwriters to decide whether you are a good risk for coverage.
Remember, with an EOI there is always the possibility that you will
be denied coverage.
Maximizing your Benefits
There are least two ways to save money on prescription costs:
- The first is to use the mail-order program. This program allows
you to order up to a 3-month supply of maintenance medication
for the cost of 2 co-pays. Contact your member services for
enrollment or for more information.
- Another way to save on prescription costs is to use our flexible-spending
account MoneyPlu$. You can designate the amount
of money you spend on medical prescription costs to be deducted
from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis and be reimbursed each
time you incur an eligible expense. This will help to lower
your taxable income so you will take home more money over the
course of the year. Check our MoneyPlu$
page for more information
If you are unsuccessful in obtaining the appropriate or necessary
information your next step would be to contact your
benefits representative for further assistance and/or instructions.
