Frequently Asked Questions — Benefits

Q: What is Paid Time Off (PTO)?
A: PTO is intended for employees to use for vacation, holidays, personal business, preventive health and dental care, and short-term sick leave or family needs. For more information, refer to Authority Human Resources Policy 18: Paid Time Off.

Q: What is Extended Sick Leave (ESL)?
A: ESL is intended for extended periods of illness or disability. ESL will begin after an employee uses 24 consecutive hours of PTO or any combination of 24 hours of PTO and unpaid leave if the employee has less than 24 hours. ESL may be accessed immediately under certain circumstances. For more information, refer to Authority Human Resources Policy 18: Paid Time Off.

Q: What is the policy for administrative leave?
A: PTO will not be charged for the following: educational time, jury duty, voting, bereavement leave, blood donation, organ/tissue donation or employees who are injured on duty due to patient assault. The executive director of the Medical Center also may authorize administrative leave for employees when justified by extraordinary circumstances. 

Q: How is my PTO paid out when I terminate?
A: Remaining PTO, not to exceed 360 hours (45 days), will be paid in a lump sum to the employee upon termination. For more information, refer to Authority Human Resources Policy 18: Paid Time Off .

Q: Will I be paid for my entire PTO balance if I have more than 360 hours (45 days)?
A: No. For more information, refer to Authority Human Resources Policy 18: Paid Time Off.

Q: Will I be paid for my extended sick leave when I terminate?
A: No. Employees who resign or are terminated are NOT eligible to be paid for unused extended sick leave. However, employees who retire may apply up to 720 hours of unused extended sick leave toward retirement service credits. For more information, refer to Authority Human Resources Policy 18: Paid Time Off.


Q: What should I do if I terminate employment at the Medical Center?
A: Medical Center employees should go to the Clinical Sciences Building, Room 109, for an exit interview.

Q: Can I continue my health insurance after I leave the Medical Center?
A: Yes, under COBRA you may continue health and dental coverage for up to 18 months. However, you are required to pay the full cost of the monthly premiums plus 2 percent.
