Renter’s Insurance: Since Hurricane Hugo tore through Charleston in 1989, several insurance companies discontinued offering any type of renter’s insurance. Renter’s insurance policies are, however, available from numerous insurance companies. A few of these companies are listed below for your convenience. A general policy will insure your personal belongings for damage or loss due to the following: smoke, fire, lightning, explosion, falling objects, wind and hail, vandalism and theft. Other types of policies are needed for damage or loss due to earthquakes and flooding. While hurricane protection is a major concern for Charleston residents, there is no specific hurricane insurance policy available. Obtaining two policies, general (wind damage) and flood, can cover damage from hurricanes. Flood insurance is never included in renter’s insurance; however, if you live in a flood prone area, we recommend investing in a flood insurance policy. The cost of renter’s insurance depends on the extent of its coverage and on the location and structure of your property. Replacement-cost coverage is recommended so that you will be reimbursed for the actual amount of money that it will cost to replace your property. Be sure to check with your car insurance carrier as renter’s insurance is usually less expensive if you already have your vehicle insured with a company. Also, as a student, the least expensive way to have your rental property insured may be through your parent’s homeowner’s policy. “Rider” policies are required to specifically insure jewelry, silver, artwork, and other expensive personal property. The following companies offer renter’s insurance: Prudential Insurance Contact: Steve Savage Phone: (843) 899-2375. Minimum contents: $20,000.
