The TCI HeartMateŽ is a pneumatically driven, totally implantable blood pump with an external console or driver. The left-ventricular assist device (LVAD) is now a viable option for many end stage heart failure patients who cannot wait for a donor heart. Ninety-five percent of the patients receiving the LVAD were classified as NYHA IV. While on the LVAD, end-organ function improved and patients reported an improved overall quality of life. MUSC now offers this device as a "bridge to transplantation" treatment option for end-stage heart failure patients listed for a transplant with our program.
The HeartMateŽ is the only implantable LVAD that has been awarded both European Conformity (CE) mark as well as FDA marketing approval.
