Instructions - Linear Regression

Steps  in Using Excel to Generate a Regression Analysis

1) Select "Tools" and then "Data Analysis" (If "Data Analysis" is not available under the "Tools" menu see the instructions for adding Data analysis.)

2) A dialog box will open and you scroll down to "Regression" - highlight and click  "OK"

3) The regression dialog box will open and you need to supply the following information:

Y Range: This is the data for your dependent variable.  For many of the examples in this text this will be "cost".  You can either type the cell range for the data directly or use your mouse to highlight the range.

X Range: This is the data for your independent variable. For this text this will often be In class this was "volume".  You can either type the cell range for the data directly or use your mouse to highlight the range.

This is really all the info you need to generate the regression. You can now click "OK" and watch the computer do its work!

The new sheet created by the regression analysis has all the information you need.

 Intercept Coefficient = Fixed Cost
X Variable Coefficient = Variable Cost per Unit
