Training Grants

Eligibility:

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be 1) US citizens or permanent residents, 2) undergraduates with a very strong interest in biosciences and biomedical research, 3) have completed at least two full years of college course work, or else have been involved in significant research opportunities, by the time the internship begins, 4) not received their undergraduate degree prior to the date the program commences, and 5) must be able to complete the entire 10 weeks of the program which begins on June 7, 2010 and ends August 13, 2010. Students must have a minimum GPA of 3.0. A cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher is preferred. Students are awarded positions based on their motivation and desire to pursue a Ph.D. in Biomedical Research.

Financial Support: Applicants should be eager to immerse in research, and self-sufficient enough to arrange their own travel. The program provides information about and assistance to find adequate housing in Charleston. Interns will receive a living allowance of $400/week for a total maximum of $4,000. This program does not pay for travel/housing/meals, but a $200 subsidy is available and intended to defray cost of travel to Charleston from a distance of at least 60 miles at the start and end of the program. Students are paid via either stipend support or payroll depending on the source of their funding. Students whose living allowance is paid via payroll will be paid biweekly and will have taxes withheld from their checks. The tax can be reimbursed from the IRS upon submitting a tax return. Students whose living allowance is paid via stipend will receive two checks – one after the third week of the program for half of the total living allowance and one on the last day of the program for the second half.
