Laptop Standards

The Office of the Chief Information Officer has established the following standards for student laptops. We recognize that many students arrive on campus with very serviceable laptops and we are making provisions for network support. Students whose laptops meet or exceed the following requirements will be supported on the MUSC network. If students wish to purchase a laptop prior to coming to MUSC, it should at least meet the following requirements. We do not require any specific brand and will support both Windows and Macintosh computers on the university's network. If a student, wishes, he or she may purchase a laptop through the university.

Mac

  • 1.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 80GB HDD
  • 802.11 a/g (laptop)
  • OS X 10.4

PC

  • 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 80GB HDD
  • 802.11 a/g (laptop)
  • Windows XP SP3

The Library (4th floor, room 426) provides limited support for student-owned laptops. Services include access to an isolated (from MUSC) network connection to download software patches and virus upgrades, limited troubleshooting for network access problems, and assistance configuring laptops for MUSC network access. Some support and service is also available from central IT Desktop and Support Services group at 25 Ehrhardt Street. More information about specific service and hours will be posted.

This information will be supplied to the Office of Enrollment Management for distribution to all prospective and new students to the university. It will also be posted on the OCIO (IT) and MUSC Library web sites.
