Background Information:
Students have completed several lessons dealing with the life history, threats to the population and efforts to rejuvenate the endangered species of loggerhead turtles.
Activity:
Engagement:
Students will view the Management PhotoDocumentary. The class will discuss the plight of the loggerhead sea turtle and ways to rejuvenate the population.
Exploration:
Students will brainstorm and discuss possible ways to enlist the help of the community to support the work of the volunteer organizations that are contributing to the protection of loggerhead turtles and their nesting sites.
Elaboration:
Students will decide upon an avenue of enlistment or recruitment to the community for help. They will create an attractive slogan or opportunity for the public to become involved with the turtle protection. The focus will be on educating the public and enlisting their help.
Explication:
Students will create a pamphlet or flyer that encourages the public to join in the help and gives specific facts about the fate of loggerheads in the community and the impact on the world.
Evaluation:
The pamphlet or flyer will be evaluated using the following rubric. Groups will choose 3-4 of the best representations. The teacher will forward the best choices to the local organizations that protect loggerhead sea turtles.
