The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and the College of Charleston/University of Charleston (C of C) are gaining recognition for research in the basic sciences and their commitment to graduate education. Lowcountry Partners for Inquiry Teaching and Learning, a partnership between these two universities and the Charleston County School District is intended to build a bridge to K-12 classrooms and create a culture of cooperation between the scientific community and the classroom. In this proposal the partners are graduate students and classroom teachers. The graduate students will bring their discoveries and excitement for investigation into classrooms (grades 6-10) to improve content knowledge and provide opportunities for inquiry learning for teachers and students. The courses, reflective seminars, and classroom experiences for the graduate fellows will provide them with the knowledge of learning processes and opportunities to use teaching and learning tools to effectively transfer content knowledge and the excitement of discovery from the laboratory bench to the classroom. The cooperating teachers will also acquire the tools for inquiry with professional development opportunities in constructivist practices, summer seminars, research internships, and reflective seminars. As a team, the fellows and teachers will design and implement lessons to spark the interest of students in science and related careers.
