Lynn Lovelace

Lynne Lovelace, 7th Grade Science Teacher, Charleston School of the Arts

I have been teaching for over 25 years in public and private schools at the Middle School, High School and College levels.  The most remarkable thing about my career is that it gets better every year.  Having reflected on why I have not burned out as a teacher, I can only say that students provide a source of love and amazement that I see more of each year.  The sublime aspects of teaching come as I stop fearing the little things and open up to the real being of each individual in our classroom.  Mastery gives me the confidence to expand my awareness beyond the curriculum and myself.  Just as I know that my students learn best when they are intrinsically motivated; I am finding the most internal reasons for what I do.  This classroom is a safe, active, playful, respectful place to learn for my students and myself.  I emphasize all the thinking and social skills that will last a lifetime. By abandoning myself to the joy of science, students have a model of how to be an interested, curious person and I get to love my job.
