Charles Hossler

Hi everyone. My name is Charles Hossler, but I am usually called Chuck. I have been a registered nurse for nearly 20 years. I am married to a nurse and we have two children in middle school. I received my undergraduate degree in Ohio and my Master in Science of Nursing degree at MUSC, completing all requirements for the CNS in nursing psychology and also the requirements for family nurse practitioners over a to year period. While I am nationally certified as a family nurse practitioner, I do not practice as such. Currently I am in my second year in the PhD in Nursing Science degree at MUSC.

Research Interests: My current research interests are in the field of diabetes. Specifically, I work with REACH 2010. REACH 2010 formed the Charleston/Georgetown REACH Diabetes Coalition, which is a broad-based, community-driven coalition focused on improving health for more than 11,000 African Americans living with diabetes in Charleston and Georgetown Counties in South Carolina. REACH 2010?s central coordinating organization is the Diabetes Initiative of South Carolina, which is located at the Medical University of South Carolina. We are involved in a number of studies at present, some quantitative and some qualitative, but all community based. We have submitted new funding requests for new studies, which we hope to have up, and running by late spring 2003. This would allow investigators an opportunity to begin research from the ground floor to completion. Our focus is on the human aspects of diabetes and its involvement in the daily lives of those affected. Our central team consists of physicians, certified diabetes educators, community health aids, dieticians, and nurse practitioners. We have an affiliation with four community clinics and have within the past year in association with MUSC and other affiliated sponsors, opened our own community health center providing holistic family health care and intensive diabetes training within the community itself.
