Happy Independence Day! Check out this NOVA web site full of explosive information: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/fireworks/. And, to learn why you see fireworks long after they have burned out, check out this site on optical illusions (http://www.sandlotscience.com/Aftereffects/After_frm.htm).

Holiday note: The APS Offices are closed Monday, July 5th and Kathleen will be out of the office tomorrow, July 2nd. Please contact Brooke (bbruthers@the-aps.org) if you need anything before the long holiday weekend.

++++RT PROGRAM NEWS++++

- Attached is a document to help you prepare your Beads Poster for the Forum. Please stick to the size specifications (min. 8 1/2" x 11" to max. 2' x 3') so we have enough room to display all of them! Also consider portability since you will be packing it or carrying it on a plane.

- Assignment #3 is due on Tuesday, July 6th. Go to http://wise.berkeley.edu to complete WISE Activities 8-13. As soon as you have completed Assignments #1-3, we will process your stipend check ($200).

++++DEADLINES++++

- July 6th: Assignment #3 is due.

- July 12th: Research 1-Pager is due via email (kkelly@the-aps.org)...feel free to send it in earlier, though!

- July 26 (at the Forum): Beads Poster

++++OPPORTUNITIES++++

- For those with SMARTBoard envy: The SMARTer Kids Grant is an educational award that assists educators in the purchase of SMART products for their classrooms. Grant amounts are 20% to 70% of the suggested list price for the purchase of qualifying SMART products.  Applications must be received prior to midnight, September 30, 2004. http://www.smarterkids.org/k12/smartproducts/

++++FORUM TRAVEL INFO++++

- A note about the Forum agenda that went out last week and apologies for any confusion. The meetings on Sunday night and Monday morning are work sessions for the Forum teaching team only (APS staff, the Mentor/Instructors and the Physiologists-in-Residence). The Forum does not officially start until 1:00 pm on Monday, so no need to change any travel plans! For those who are arriving earlier, you can take the time to relax and enjoy the grounds at Airlie.

- Things to consider when packing for the Forum:

 - - Bring an extra bag and leave room in your suitcase because you will be leaving at the end of the week with a LARGE binder, plus other books, handouts and goodies. Think about packing a foldable duffle bag or gym bag in your suitcase.

 - - Airlie is a secluded conference center in the beautiful countryside of Virginia. While Airlie can accommodate many needs (toothbrush, shampoo, band-aid, etc.), there is not a gift shop/drug store on campus or within quick walking distance. Please refill your prescriptions and bring any over-the-counter medications that think you might want or need.  If you forget something, the nearest stores are four miles away in Warrenton.  Shuttle service is NOT available from Airlie to town; taxi service can be called, if necessary.

 - - See the attached memo from Brooke for lots of great hints about what to bring to Airlie.

++++ALUMNI RT CORNER++++

Important information from Cory Slifstein (Frontiers 2000, Mentor/Instructor 2003):

 "Be prepared to eat at the Airlie Center.  The food is great!!!!!"

+++++++++++++++++++++++

Have a great holiday weekend!

Kathleen
